The Day of the Seafarer, observed every June 25, was established by a resolution adopted at the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila. This event marked the adoption of the revised STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) Convention. The day recognizes the unique and vital contributions seafarers make to international seaborne trade, the global economy, and civil society.

The resolution encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners, and all related parties to actively promote and meaningfully celebrate this day. The Day of the Seafarer is also recognized by the United Nations as an observance day, underscoring its global significance.

In the Philippines, the government has set this day aside as the Day of the Filipino Seafarer, highlighting the significant role Filipino seafarers play in the maritime industry.

Under Republic Act No. 9848, the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar, is a national holiday for the observance of Eid’l Adha. This year, it falls on June 17, 2024.
