You may take part if you are a Filipino college student currently enrolled in any mathematics-related course (e.g., calculus, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, accounting, mathematical economics, computer science, data analysis, or other applied or conceptual mathematics courses) at a university or college in the Philippines.

The award recognizes Prof. Bernardo's national and international impact on the scientific community through his body of work in psychological science, education, hope and well-being, culture, inequality, and human development.

More Than Ritual: How Everyday Spiritual Experiences Boost Life Satisfaction

For many Filipinos, faith is part of everyday life. But how exactly does it relate to happiness? A recent study explored this question among Filipino Catholics, focusing on the link between religious practices, spiritual experiences, and life satisfaction.

Researchers found that private religious activities, such as prayer, are connected to greater life satisfaction. However, the key factor is not simply practicing religion. Instead, these practices seem to work by deepening a person’s daily spiritual experience, a felt sense of closeness to God in everyday life.

To better understand this, the study also improved how spirituality is measured. A shorter, 5-item version of a commonly used scale was tested and found to be more accurate for Filipino Catholics, avoiding overlap with general mental or social well-being.

Overall, the findings suggest that religious practices can enhance well-being by nurturing meaningful spiritual experiences. This highlights the importance of faith not just as a routine, but as a lived and personal connection that contributes to a more satisfying life.

This event will feature the scientific lecture of 5th LMS Winner, Dr. Sixtus Dane Asuncion Ramos, on his award-winning research entitled, "Locus-of-Hope in Therapeutic Communities for Addiction: Testing the Framework, Feasibility, and Efficacy of a Brief Intervention"

NOTE: This lecture is open to the public. Non-DLSU participants shall be required to comply with other documents/forms required by the University.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Sixtus Dane Ramos, part-time faculty and member of the HOPE lab, for being the 5th winner of the Loretta Makasiar Sicat Prize for the Social Sciences.

The award recognizes Dr. Ramos's outstanding PhD dissertation on the Locus-of-hope Enhancement Program (LEAP), which improved recovery outcomes for people suffering from substance abuse.

The Loretta Makasiar Sicat Prize for the Social Sciences is an annual award given by the Philippine Social Science Council to outstanding MA theses and PhD Dissertations.
