The problem with reflexivity is that it often happens in hindsight. Only when we see in the transcript from a research interview how certain questions we asked led to undesirable outcomes do we realize the importance of critically reflecting on our role as researchers, especially if we work with vulnerable groups. In this talk, I draw on a corpus of more than 500 narratives by Indonesian and Filipino migrant domestic workers (MDWs) who participated in sharing sessions at a church shelter in Hong Kong, or in their home communities. Using a discourse analytical approach, I analyze examples that illustrate how questions and answers in the research interview may provide evidence of very different worldviews, histories, and experiences.
Many of the MDWs who participated in the research were traumatized, and another important issue in the sharing sessions is believability. Scholars have argued that trauma victimsโ healing depends on their ability to tell their story to empathetic listeners who will share in their suffering. This is controversial, both in the literature and in migrant-worker NGOs, where some form of emotional detachment is recommended. I argue that an important aspect of sharing in MDWsโ pain is to believe their stories. I consider some examples of human-inflicted suffering that will challenge us as listeners, and discuss how we deal with stories of other peopleโs suffering.
The talk also discusses positionality, both in terms of social power and its potential impact, and in terms of distribution of roles in the interview. Sometimes a situation requires us to step outside our traditional role as researcher and take on a different role because the participants need us to be more than a researcher. I discuss how we deal with these seemingly contradictory roles, and how we can adopt an ethical research agenda, which shows care and concern for our participantsโ wellbeing.
