PNU - USC Central Student Council

LOCAL UPDATE: Several students raised concerns Wednesday night over the conduct of online synchronous classes Thursday after reporting continued power shortages in their areas as of 11:25 p.m., May 13.

PNU is set to remain in online synchronous modality on Thursday, May 14, following a forecasted extreme heat index.

However, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed Luzon, including Metro Manila and nearby provinces, and the Visayas islands under yellow and red alerts amid thinning power reserves due to forced outages of several power plants on Wednesday afternoon through evening.

A yellow alert is declared when reserve power falls below the required safety margin, increasing the possibility of rotational power interruptions despite the supply still meeting current demand.

A red alert, the highest alert level, is declared when the electricity supply is insufficient to meet demand due to depleted reserves.

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said in an advisory that it implemented emergency rotating power interruptions averaging three hours starting at 3:23 p.m. "to manage the current system condition" in Luzon.

Despite Meralco's earlier announcement that power interruptions in red alert areas would cease by 11:00 p.m., several students continued to report outages beyond that time.

Outgoing Central Student Council (CSC) Chairperson Charmee Verginia said the council had personally reached out to the Student Affairs and Services Office (SASO) regarding the matter and had yet to receive a reply as of posting.

No further advisory has been issued on whether power interruptions will extend through Wednesday, and a separate announcement from the university is also awaited as of press time.

In accordance with University Memorandum No. 150, s. 2026, all undergraduate classes at PNU Manila and PNU North Luzon will transition to full online delivery tomorrow, 11 May 2026, following forecasts of a heat index reaching 42°C or higher.

Under the university's standing policy for Term 3, an automatic shift to remote learning is triggered whenever such extreme heat conditions are anticipated. Students and faculty are advised to monitor PAGASA forecasts regularly, as the University will no longer issue separate daily advisories for automatic shifts under these specific weather criteria.

A fire struck a residential area in Barangay San Antonio, Parañaque City on the late evening of May 6, 2026 (Wednesday).
