Reading is a key skill that opens the door to learning. However, some learners struggle to read or have not yet developed basic reading skills. To support non-readers, teachers and parents can use simple and effective techniques that build confidence and lay a strong foundation for reading. Below are helpful strategies to guide non-readers on their journey toward becoming successful readers.
Here's some effective reading strategies for your kids! 👇👇

🔤 1. Phonemic Awareness Activities
Help learners hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words.

🌟Clapping syllables in words

🌟Rhyming games (e.g., "What rhymes with cat?")

🌟Beginning sounds practice ("What sound does 'sun' start with?")

📚 2. Phonics Instruction
Teach letter-sound relationships so students can decode (sound out) words.

🌟Use letter cards or magnetic letters

🌟Practice CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant, like “cat”)

🌟Gradually move to blends and digraphs (e.g., "ch", "sh")

🧠 3. Sight Word Recognition
Introduce high-frequency words that cannot always be sounded out.

🌟Use flashcards, games like bingo, or word walls

🌟Practice reading in short sentences (e.g., “I see a dog.”)

🧍‍♂️ 4. Multi-sensory Learning
Engage more than one sense to help with memory and understanding.

🌟Tracing letters in sand or with fingers

🌟Using songs, actions, or drawing while learning words

🌟Use story props, puppets, or realia (real objects)

📖 5. Repeated Reading
Build fluency and confidence through practice.

🌟Read the same book multiple times

🌟Use predictable books with repeating patterns

🌟Let the student “read” using pictures and memory

👂 6. Read Aloud and Shared Reading
Let learners hear fluent reading and follow along.

🌟Use big books or projected texts

🌟Point to each word as you read

🌟Encourage the learner to join in for familiar parts

🎯 7. Modeling and Echo Reading
Let the teacher read first, then the learner repeats.

🌟Helps with intonation, expression, and word recognition

🌟Builds confidence through guided support

🎨 8. Picture Clues and Visual Literacy
Teach learners to use pictures to make meaning.

🌟Ask: “What do you see in the picture?”

🌟Predict the story before reading

🌟Match pictures with words (e.g., dog → 🐶)

🧩 9. Games and Interactive Activities
Make learning fun and engaging.

🌟Word matching games

🌟Letter-sound treasure hunt

🌟Memory cards (e.g., match “sun” to a picture)

🧑‍🏫 10. Individualized and Small Group Instruction
Give one-on-one support when possible.

🌟Adjust to the learner’s level

🌟Give frequent praise and encouragement

🌟Track progress regularly

The five traditional human senses are sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. These senses help us perceive and interact with the world around us.

Sight:
Our ability to see, primarily through the eyes, allows us to perceive visual information like color, shape, and movement.

Hearing:
Through our ears, we can detect and interpret sounds, such as speech, music, and environmental noises.

Smell:
The sense of smell, also known as olfaction, is facilitated by the nose and allows us to detect and identify odors.

Taste:
Our taste buds, located on the tongue, help us perceive different flavors, including sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.

Touch:
This sense, mediated by the skin, enables us to detect various tactile stimuli, including pressure, temperature, and pain.
