Last May 20, 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) organized the very first Knowledge Exchange Series Special Seminar for the Promotion of the Philippine Statistics Authority Data Enclave Centers.
MusikaPilipinas economist and road map expert, Ms. Marjorie Muyrong-Rodriguez, together with Program Leader, Dr. Maria Alexandra Chua, and the team presented how data from the PSA Data Enclave Centers helped in the Phase 1 research entitled "Research and Mapping Toward Understanding, Scoping, and Defining the Philippine Music Industry".
Dr. Ma. Paquita Bonnet from the De La Salle University, also presented the research "Operationalizing Statistical Mapping of Selected Creative & Cultural Sectrs under the Philippine Cultural Statistics Framework" at the seminar.
In the seminar, concerns were also raised regarding data gaps and how this can be addressed in the future.

Last Friday, May 3, 2024, the MusikaPilipinas Team convened a meeting with Dr. Eric B. Zerrudo, newly appointed Executive Director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and Ms. Beverly M. Bautista, Officer-in-Charge of the UST Gradute School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (GS-CCCPET). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and seek consultation on the MusikaPilipinas Project on developing music cities in relation to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
THE MUSIKAPILIPINAS research project held a day-long recording session of various Filipino folk songs on April 26 at the Sounds Kradle Inc. studio in Quezon City.
These recordings are part of the project’s Music Education initiative, and will be used as material for E-modules in the projects proposed music education syllabus.

MusikaPilipinas Research Team met with Viva Cebu’s Chief Sound Technician, Glen Alonzo, and Producer, Nash Actub to get insights about the growing local recording industry in the region.
A focus group discussion with Cebu city music teachers headed by Dr. Juvelyn Otero, Education Program Supervisor was held on March 18. The objective of the FGD is to assess the status of music education in various regions of the country.
In line with surveying the economic situation of Filipino luthiers, the MusikaPilipinas Team also visited Guitar Master, Cebu in Lapu-Lapu City, and met the owner, Mr. Ronnie Pangatungan, a third generation luthier himself.
The MusikaPilipinas Team visited “Alegre Guitars”, a local guitar maker in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan, to survey the economic situation of Filipino luthiers firsthand.

Just a week to go until "RESONANCES: Exploring Global Music Histories Across Cultures," the IMS (International Musicological Society) Study Group on Global History of Music’s highly anticipated Second Conference on November 3-4, 2023, at the University of Santo Tomas Central Laboratory Auditorium in Manila, Philippines.
We gladly present our speakers for the first session on the first day, Professors Egberto Bermúdez, Michael Christoforidis, and Beatriz Magalhães Castro.
Bermudez is a tenured professor at the Universidad Nacional de
Colombia in Bogotá. He is the author of Los instrumentos musicales en Colombia (1985), La mísica en el arte colonial de Colombia (1994) and Historia de la Música en Bogotá: 1538-1938 (2000) and has published numerous articles and studies on organology, colonial, traditional and popular Colombian and Latin American music. Among his established academic designations, he is also the current Vice-President of the IMS.
Christoforidis is a Professor in Musicology at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. He has published extensively on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish music and dance, and its impact on Western culture. Other research interests include the impact of the visual arts upon musical modernism, issues of national identity and exoticism in music, and the history of the acoustic guitar. He has published two monographs: Manuel de Falla and Visions of Spanish Music (Routledge, 2017) and Carmen and the Staging of Spain (with Elizabeth Kertesz, Oxford University Press, 2018).
Castro graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with a degree in Music History and Analysis. She finished her Masters and Doctorate at The Juilliard School of Music in 1987 and 1992, respectively, and did her postdoctoral studies at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the National Library of Portugal from 2002 to 2008. She is currently an Associate Professor IV at the University of Brasilia, where she founded and spearheaded the "Music in Context" journal. Castro specializes in musicology and performing practices, focusing on instrumental music, diffusion of musical classicism, digital libraries, repertoires and international sources for Iberic-American music, and tradition and innovation in Brazilian Music.

MusikaPilipinas is not just a research project, it is about our music industry. All musicians and professionals in the music industry and music-related businesses in the Philippines are enjoined in this endeavor.
The MusikaPilipinas project, funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines, was initiated by Congressman Christopher “Toff” de Venecia in relation to the then proposed Philippine Creative Industries Development Act (PCIDA), or what is now Republic Act no. 11904.
Your participation in this survey will greatly help the MusikaPilipinas research team put together a more accurate profile of the stakeholders of the Philippine music industry.
The 6th annual Musik Manila Expo was held last August 25-26 at the World Trade Center.
120 manufacturers and brands of sound systems, stage lights and stage equipment, music recording software and hardware, musical instruments and even video cameras participated this year. The event also held interactive product demos, skills workshops, live shows and product launches.
The 2-day event was saw more than 9,700 attendees, according to estimates from the organizers.
The MusikaPilipinas research team documented the first day of the "Musik Manila 2023 : Live Entertainment Technology Expo".
MusikaPilipinas, a comprehensive economic baseline study that mapped out the country's music industry, officially launched its research report last Wednesday, August 23 at the auditorium of the Central Laboratory Building in the University of Sto. Tomas (UST). The launch was held both onsite and online, with viewers tuning in from Zoom and FB live.
The opening remarks were given by Fr. Janel Abogado, O.P., UST's Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation. Congressman Christopher "Toff" De Venecia gave the virtual keynote speech.
The guest lecturers for the program included Atty. Gio Franco Gomez, a highly technical consultant at the Department of Trade and Industry, and Dr. Shain Shapiro, founder and chairman of the global research and strategy consultancy Sound Diplomacy.
The presenters of MusikaPilipinas's research findings included program leader Dr. Ma. Alexandra Chua, project economist and roadmap expert Marjorie Muyrong, and project information officer John Christian Jose.
Dr. Geraldo Petilla, the chief administrative officer of the National Research Council of the Philippines, gave the closing remarks, and FactsFirst host and political journalist Christian Esguerra served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

Shain is a globally recognised thought leader at the convergence of music, culture and urban policy. This is showcased in his debut book, This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better, due out on Repeater Books (distributed in the United States by Random House) on September 12, 2023. Shain has defined a new way to think about the value of music in cities and places and through it, influenced over 130 cities and places to invest in music and culture as founder and executive chairman of Sound Diplomacy and founder and executive director of the not-for-profit global Center for Music Ecosystems. He has authored authoritative reports on the role of music in cities, tourism, the night time economy, real estate and recovery, including the most extensive guide to music and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ever written, in partnership with the United Nations. He has spoken at hundreds of global conventions, such as SXSW and the UN World Urban Forum and delivered the first ever TEDx talk on music’s role in cities. Shain holds a PhD from the University of London and lives in East London.
