From Spreadsheets to Smart Decisions: SMIT Faculty Takes on Power BI 101 ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ’ก

Who says data analytics is only for students?

Faculty members from the School of Management and Information Technology stepped into the world of dashboards, charts, and data storytelling during the Power BI 101 Workshop: Transforming Educational Data into Actionable Insights, held on July 3, 2026.

The workshop was organized by the Business Intelligence and Analytics Program through the initiative of Ms. Carmen Luz Cueto-Pacaรฑa. Her commitment to relevant and future-ready faculty development created an opportunity for SMIT educators to explore the same data tools increasingly used by students and industry professionals.

The faculty-exclusive session brought together educators from the ACI and LME Clusters for a beginner-friendly and hands-on introduction to Power BI. No complicated coding and no need to panic over spreadsheets!

Guided by Mr. Melvin Ferrer, EMBA, a Business Intelligence and Analytics professional with more than 10 years of industry experience, participants learned how to transform ordinary data into interactive dashboards, meaningful visualizations, and actionable insights.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored how to:

โœ… Import and transform Excel data using Power Query
โœ… Build fact and dimension tables
โœ… Create a simple star schema
โœ… Develop KPI cards, charts, and interactive visualizations
โœ… Write introductory DAX measures
โœ… Design executive academic dashboards
โœ… Apply data storytelling principles
โœ… Translate institutional data into actionable insights

More than learning a new platform, the workshop demonstrated how data can support research, grading, classroom planning, program development, student performance analysis, and evidence-based decision-making.

At SMIT, faculty development means more than keeping up with technology. It means staying ahead, understanding the tools our students use, and bringing practical industry knowledge back into the classroom.

Thank you to Ms. Carmen Luz Cueto-Pacaรฑa for championing this meaningful learning initiative, to Mr. Melvin Ferrer for generously sharing his expertise, and to the Business Intelligence and Analytics Program for empowering SMIT educators through data.

Because when educators become more data-driven, decisions become smarter, teaching becomes more responsive, and students become even more future-ready.

At Benilde SMIT, we do not simply teach the future. We learn, analyze, and shape it together.

For those who want to be part of a future-ready, globally connected, and industry-driven learning environment, admissions for AY 2026โ€“2027 are ongoing through the DLS-CSB Admissions Center

12 Benilde Senior High School students from the Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) strand completed their Work Immersion Program under the BSBA-Business Intelligence and Analytics Program (BSBA-BIA) of De La Salle-College of Saint Benildeโ€™s School of Management and Information Technology (SMIT), facilitated by members of the Society of Analysts and Business Intelligence (SABI).
Beginning on May 22, the student interns explored data analytics and intelligence concepts through handsโ€‘on activities such as business process mapping, data cleaning, statistics, basic coding, data modeling, and data visualization. They applied tools including Excel and Power Query for data cleaning and preparation, Jamovi for statistical analysis, Power BI for data visualization, and Python for coding.
The immersion participants also had the opportunity to experience collegeโ€‘level learning by attending classes on Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Fundamentals of Business Analytics (FUNBANA), gaining a theoretical foundation to complement their practical training.

Their 80-hour journey culminated in an endโ€‘toโ€‘end business case presentation from data preparation to Power BI dashboards, insights, and recommendations โ€” showcasing their growth and potential in the field of Data Analytics.
The program concluded on July 3, 2026 with a completion ceremony and farewell lunch to celebrate the interns' dedication, growth, and achievements.

This milestone for BSBA-BIA program, SABI, and SMIT highlights a shared commitment to making business intelligence and analytics more accessible and beginnerโ€‘friendly, fostering critical thinking, and cultivating future data analysts and leaders.
Sincere thanks to the SABI members who facilitated the program: Atasha Gabrielle Guiab for leading the immersion and delivering the majority of the discussion, Aldreal Voltaire Labandillo for mentoring on Python coding and model building, Elyssa Dela Cruz for supporting data visualization and ensuring smooth program coordination, and to the BIA faculty members who provided guidance throughout this journey.
Congratulations to our student interns for successfully completing the program! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

May the knowledge and experiences gained during your immersion with BSBA-BIA and SABI continue to guide you in whichever path you take, helping you grow into more analytical and dataโ€‘driven thinkers.

Beyond the Classroom. Into the Global Marketplace. ๐ŸŒโœˆ๏ธ

What if your classroom extended beyond just four walls?

At the Benilde School of Management & Information Technology (SMIT), learning goes beyond lectures, quizzes, and case studies. Students don't just learn about global business, they experience it firsthand.

This July, 21 Benilde students, together with faculty mentors Mr. Masahiro Yato and Dr. Junerey Baladhay of the Benilde Export Management Program, flew to Malaysia for MEXa 2026: Export Immersion Program, an international microcredentialing experience held in partnership with the Malaysia Export Academy and European International University.

From July 5โ€“12, 2026, students immersed themselves in the world of international trade while working toward becoming Certified Export Executives through an internationally recognized microcredential.

But this wasn't your typical study tour.

Students explored how ASEAN economies trade, compete, and collaborate while learning real export strategies, international marketing, logistics, supply chain operations, and market expansion. They met industry experts, observed export operations, and gained insights that simply can't be replicated inside a classroom.

Their learning journey included exclusive visits to:

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the country's national trade promotion agency
Northport (Malaysia) Bhd., one of Malaysia's largest international ports
Malaysian Timber Council, promoting one of the country's biggest export industries
Sri Ledang Sdn. Bhd., a manufacturer and exporter operating in the global market

The program concluded with each student team developing and presenting a comprehensive export plan, applying everything they learned throughout the immersion to solve real international business challenges.

While the program is led by the Export and Global Business Management (EGBM) program, it is also open to students from other SMIT programs who want to broaden their global perspective and prepare for careers that cross borders.

Today's employers are looking for graduates who understand international markets, work confidently across cultures, and can think globally. Experiences like MEXa 2026 help Benilde students build exactly those skills, long before graduation.

College is more than earning a diploma. It's about opening doors to opportunities that many students only dream about. At Benilde SMIT, international immersion programs, industry partnerships, and global certifications become part of your college journey, giving you experiences that set you apart wherever your career takes you.

For those who want to be part of a future-ready, globally connected, and industry-driven learning environment, admissions for AY 2025โ€“2026 are ongoing through the DLS-CSB Admissions Center
