𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 💸❌

This 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, the 𝑺𝒂𝒏 𝑩𝒆𝒅𝒂 𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒕𝒚, as one of the participating youth organizations of the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, stands with young people around the world in demanding a future protected from addiction and industry interference.

Around the world, young people face a common reality: the to***co industry continues to find new ways to recruit, influence, and profit, while the consequences are carried by individuals, families, communities, and future generations.

THAT IS WHY OUR DEMANDS ARE CLEAR.

We call for stronger protection against addiction, public health policies free from to***co industry interference, science that remains independent and transparent, the rejection of industry narratives, and meaningful accountability for the health, environmental, and economic harms caused by the to***co industry.

At the heart of these demands, we, Global Youth Voices (GYV), a movement of more than 70 youth organizations and coalitions covering over 135 countries, may come from different contexts, but we share common aspirations:

1. To be protected from addiction and to***co industry interference.
2. To have public health policies and science that put our health and future before industry interests.
3. To have a meaningful role in shaping and monitoring policies, while holding the to***co industry accountable for the harms it causes.

Last Friday, August 14, 2026, the 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐝𝐚 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲, brought the department together for a defining moment of reflection, direction, and renewed purpose.

SODA 2026 was more than a look back. It was a clear-eyed assessment of 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁—recognizing milestones, evaluating current initiatives, and setting the strategic course for the academic year ahead.

To everyone who joined us, contributed to the conversation, and shared in this collective vision, thank you for making SODA 2026 a meaningful success.

𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪𝗦:𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰? 💡📊

𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡, 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘆𝗼 𝗨𝗣 𝗽𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝗻? 😱👛

When we hear that 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻, it is easy to assume that prices will automatically go back to what they were before.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀?

The key is understanding the difference.

𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is the general increase in the prices of goods and services over time. As prices rise, the purchasing power of money decreases—meaning the same amount of money can buy fewer things than before.

However, when we hear that the 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 is lower, it does not necessarily mean that prices are going down. It simply means that prices are still increasing, but at a slower rate compared to before.

This is where 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 comes in. Deflation is different from lower inflation because it refers to an actual and sustained decrease in the general price level of goods and services.

So, 𝙞𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙜𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙤𝙤?
Not necessarily.

Imagine a tray of eggs that costs ₱200. If inflation causes its price to increase by 10%, it becomes ₱220. The following year, if inflation drops to 2%, the price does not return to ₱200. Instead, it increases by 2% from ₱220, making it approximately ₱224.40.

💡𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿:
Think of inflation as the speed at which prices are increasing. When inflation is high, prices are rising faster. When inflation is lower, prices are still rising—but more slowly.

✅𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽:
Don’t assume that lower inflation means everything will suddenly become cheaper. Look at whether prices are actually decreasing, because lower inflation and deflation are not the same thing.

Before the Saturday-Sunday reset, the idea of having two full days away from work was far from ordinary. During the Industrial Revolution, workers faced exhausting hours, eventually fueling labor movements that demanded shorter working days and more time for rest and leisure.

📜1926 — Henry Ford introduced the five-day, 40-hour workweek, helping popularize a work schedule that would eventually become the modern standard. But there was more to it than simply giving workers an extra day off: more leisure meant more opportunities to shop, travel, and consume—connecting shorter working hours with the rise of mass consumption.

From the eight-hour movement to Ford’s five-day workweek and the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act, the history of the weekend reflects a major transformation in how economies understood work, productivity, leisure, and consumption.

📊𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: The weekend was more than a break from work—it became part of the economic system itself. By giving workers more time to rest and consume, the shorter workweek helped strengthen the connection between wages, leisure, consumer demand, and mass production, contributing to the development of modern consumer capitalism.
