While GDP measures the economic activity within the Philippines, 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 (GNP) highlights the total income earned by Filipinos worldwide, including the substantial remittances sent by our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). These hardworking Filipinos contribute around USD 40 billion in remittances,almost 9% of the country’s national output making the Philippines one of the top remittance-receiving countries globally.

These remittances do more than boost family income, they support daily needs, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 and strengthen our foreign exchange reserves, which helps maintain peso stability.

Despite efforts to champion private enterprise, the administration faced a deadlock with a landlord-dominated Congress, leading to stalled land reforms and widening inequality. By 1990, the economic struggle was evident as GNP growth fell to 3%, and per capita income remained below late-1970s levels, highlighting the immense difficulty of balancing debt obligations with social justice.

Today, we commemorate the 𝟖𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 of the bravery of Filipino soldiers in Bataan during World War II. Their sacrifice is not just a chapter in history, but a living reminder of the dignity and resilience of our people. Through their blood and sweat, they defended the freedom we enjoy today.

As a nation, it is our duty to keep their memory alive through genuine love and service to the country. In doing so, the sacrifices of the past guide us in the present and inspire the future.
