Fernando V. Amorsolo was the first National Artist, with the official title โ€œGrand Old Man of the Philippine Artโ€. He developed the backlighting technique that became his trademark where figures - a cluster of leaves, spill of hair, the swell of breast - are seen aglow on canvas. His citation underscores all his years of creative activity which have โ€œdefined and perpetuated a distinct element of the nationโ€™s artistic and cultural heritageโ€. His major works include โ€˜Maiden in a Streamโ€™, โ€˜El Ciegoโ€™, โ€˜Dalagang Bukidโ€™, โ€˜The Mestizaโ€™, โ€˜Planting Riceโ€™, โ€˜Sunday Morning Going to Towโ€™, โ€˜Antipolo Fiestaโ€™ and โ€˜Afternoon Meals of Rice Workersโ€™.

Greetings to National Artist Benedicto โ€œBenCabโ€ Cabrera on his 81st birthday.

Benedicto R. Cabrera, who signs his paintings โ€œBencab,โ€ upheld the primacy of drawing over the decorative color. Bencab started his career in the mid-sixties as a lyrical expressionist. His solitary figures of scavengers emerging from a dark landscape were piercing stabs at the social conscience of a people long inured to poverty and dereliction. Bencab, who was born in Malabon, has christened the emblematic scavenger figure โ€œSabel.โ€ For Bencab, Sabel is a melancholic symbol of dislocation, despair, and isolationโ€“the personification of human dignity threatened by lifeโ€™s vicissitudes, and the vast inequities of Philippine society.
