In celebration of National Language Month this 2022, we recommend THE WOMAN WHO HAD TWO NAVELS by Nick Joaquin ππ
The Woman Who Had Two Navels is a 1961 novel, which is well-thought-out as a classic and historical story in Philippine literature. This story was the first to receive the Harry Stonehill award. It conveys the story of a Filipino influential woman who is hallucinating and is disturbed by the belief that she has two navels or belly buttons to be given special treatment. This novel is a literary view of the influence of the past on the time encompassing events in the Philippines after World War II, an examination of the collection of heritage and legacy, and the queries of how can the Filipinos exercise their freedom and know how to deal with the fright after suffering from epiphanic acknowledgment.

In celebration of National Language Month this 2022, we recommend CAVE AND SHADOWS by: Nick Joaquin ππ
The plot of the novel revolves mainly around Jack Hensonβs struggle to uncover the truth regarding the strange death of her stepdaughter Nenita Coogan.
The girl was found in the cave (which was claimed by Christians and pagans, with Ginoong Ina as the leader, to be their place of worship) as if she was just sleeping smelling sweet. Jack investigated how the body got inside the cave even though the cave's mouth was locked down as ordered by the town mayor. He later discovers a secret passage inside the chapel of the village on top of the hill where the cave is located. His investigation made him conclude that his old friend Alex Manzano was behind the murder and threats on his life. But as situations began to build up, Alex and his son Andrei died. Alex left a letter for Jack but Jack decided to let Pocholo burn it. Pocholo eagerly did, giving Jack the evidence that it was Pocholo who was really behind all the troubles, including the setting up of Alex.
Pocholo ran away after he was exposed and Jack confronted Ginoong Ina who informed Jack that Nenita came back to life for her to touch the life of Jack as a goddess.
Jack decided to return to Davao with Chedeng but Monica disagreed and told Chedeng that Jack wanted to go back to Davao with her, not Chedeng. Chedeng left for New York and Jack returned to Davao a lonely man.

In celebration of National Language Month this 2022, we recommend My Sad Republic by Eric Gamalinda ππ
A story of love and loss, obsession and revolution. Set against the epic backdrop of the Spanish-American War and the subsequent war between the United States and the Philippines, it is loosely based on the life of Dionisio Magbuela, also known as Isio, or βThe Pope.β One of several leaders of millenarian movements across the archipelago, he rose to legend during a time of immense social and cultural change in the country, where the Spaniards had kept many islands under the spell of sixteenth-century superstition. It was a time that would be pivotal in the history not only of the Philippines but also the United States, which was on the brink of becoming the next global empire. Blending actual historical sources, folklore, and native ritual, the novel narrates the impact of these upheavals on the lives of several characters whose destinies are altered by a nation about to be born, and its repercussions which linger to this day.

In celebration of National Language Month this 2022, we will recommend a book once a week that will showcase different classic Filipino stories.
For this week we present, BANAAG AT SIKAT by: Lope K. Santos
This novel is about two friends: Delfin and Felipe. Delfin is a socialist, while Felipe advocates the works of an anarchist. As a socialist, Delfin believes and wishes to spread the principles of socialism to the public, where the citizens could have more right in all the businesses, properties, and other national activities. Although he is poor who studies law and works as a writer for a newspaper, Delfin still strongly believes that a society inclined to the cause of the poor through peaceful means, a challenge that could be achieved through violence.
On the other hand, Felipe β who advocates anarchy β believes in the forceful way of destroying the existing powers and cruelty harbored by the rich landowners. He wants to dispel the abusive members of society who rule society. Even though he is the son of a rich town leader, Felipe hates the cruel ways of his father. He would rather see a society with equal rights and equal status for all its citizens: where there is no difference between the poor and the rich classes.
