📘 UNDERSTANDING STCW LICENSE (Deck Department Explained) ⚓
Many are asking what the STCW code means on our MARINA Professional ID. Here’s a simple breakdown for everyone in the deck department:
🔹 STCW II/1
Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OIC-NW)
– Usually 3rd Mate / 2nd Mate
– Can stand bridge watch
– Operational Level
👉 First license as a deck officer
🔹 STCW II/2
Chief Mate / Master (500 GT and above)
– Management Level
– Can serve as Chief Mate
– Can serve as Master (Captain) once fully qualified
👉 Responsible for navigation, cargo operations, safety, and overall command
🔹 STCW II/3
Master / Officer on ships less than 500 GT (Near Coastal)
– Usually domestic or near coastal trade
– Limited vessel size and trading area
👉 Management level but with limitations
🎯 Simple comparison:
II/1 = Watchkeeping Officer
II/2 = Chief Mate / Captain (500 GT and above)
II/3 = Captain for smaller vessels (near coastal)
