π UNDERSTANDING STCW LICENSE (Deck Department Explained) β
Many are asking what the STCW code means on our MARINA Professional ID. Hereβs a simple breakdown for everyone in the deck department:
πΉ STCW II/1
Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OIC-NW)
β Usually 3rd Mate / 2nd Mate
β Can stand bridge watch
β Operational Level
π First license as a deck officer
πΉ STCW II/2
Chief Mate / Master (500 GT and above)
β Management Level
β Can serve as Chief Mate
β Can serve as Master (Captain) once fully qualified
π Responsible for navigation, cargo operations, safety, and overall command
πΉ STCW II/3
Master / Officer on ships less than 500 GT (Near Coastal)
β Usually domestic or near coastal trade
β Limited vessel size and trading area
π Management level but with limitations
π― Simple comparison:
II/1 = Watchkeeping Officer
II/2 = Chief Mate / Captain (500 GT and above)
II/3 = Captain for smaller vessels (near coastal)
