The Cebu Provincial Government is reminding the public to remain vigilant against leptospirosis as continuous heavy rains and possible flooding increase the risk of infection.

According to Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Elisse Nicole Catalan, floodwaters may be contaminated with urine from infected rats and other animals. The bacteria can enter the body through cuts or wounds, as well as through the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Residents are advised to avoid walking or swimming in floodwaters whenever possible. If exposure cannot be avoided, they should wear waterproof boots and gloves, cover wounds with waterproof bandages, and wash exposed skin immediately with soap and clean water.

The Provincial Health Office also reminds the public to watch for symptoms that may appear 2 to 30 days after exposure, including fever, chills, headache, muscle painβ€”particularly in the calves or lower backβ€”red eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
Immediate medical attention should be sought if a person develops yellowing of the eyes or skin, difficulty breathing, or decreased urine output.

Dr. Catalan also advised the public not to self-medicate with doxycycline or other antibiotics, emphasizing that these medications should only be taken upon the advice of a healthcare professional.

Residents who develop symptoms after contact with floodwater are urged to seek medical consultation immediately and inform their healthcare provider about their floodwater exposure.

The Cebu Provincial Government continues to encourage everyone to take preventive measures, reminding the public that early consultation can save lives. | CAPITOL PIO
