The universe served another fascinating cup of TEA as we explored the role of neutrinos in powering supernovae, from collapsing stellar cores to flavor-changing particles that may determine the fate of exploding stars.
The session opened discussions on how these nearly undetectable particles carry immense energy and shape some of the most energetic events in the cosmos.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our speaker for sharing his knowledge and making such a complex topic both engaging and thought-provoking, as well as to everyone who participated and brought curiosity into the discussion.
'Til the next TEA Time! ๐ต

Astro-NEWS: SYZYGY in Japan! ๐ฏ๐ต
Last March 24, 2026, RTU Astrophysics majors Christopher Tumamac Jr. (SYZYGY's President) and Ryan Andrew Doรฑa (member) flew all the way to Japan, while Rose Ann Cezar (SYZYGY's VPIA) presented online for the 2025 Asian Try Zero-G (ATZG), held at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Tsukuba Space Center in Ibaraki, Japan.
Accompanied by Ms. Mariel Juanillo of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), they were given the opportunity to present their experiment before other participating countries from across the Asia-Pacific region.
The competition, hosted by JAXA, invites students all around the Asia-Pacific region to submit their experiment proposals. Winning entries will be conducted by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station's KIBO Module. Out of the 500 proposals from 1,176 applicants, the Double Gyroscope experiment among 10 other entries were selected.
The whole program started with a tour of the JAXA Dome, followed by a group photo in front of the HTV rocket, then the presentations, and finally the livestream of the experiments being conducted aboard the ISS.
But what the news doesn't tell you...
Christopher, Ryan, and Rose started their journey by doing research under former Balik Scientist Dr. Amador Muriel, reviving the research group called Blue Stragglers. Their study focused on behavior of coupled oscillators in microgravity. With the need to test their hypotheses, they sought out on competing in the Asian Try Zero-G Challenge 2025.
Their initial proposal was submitted on January 18, 2025.
With further support from their friends and instructors, Dr. Rose Ann Bautista, Mr. Bjorn Jasper Raquel, and Mr. Aster Neil Abellano, they eventually got selected as one of the winning entries.
After a year of waiting and preparing for the actual experiment to be done aboard the ISS, their work finally moves from proposal to actual ex*****on.
Now, they become the 3rd Filipinos to successfully participate in the ATZG โ a milestone that reflects years of hard work, patience, and perseverance.
Congratulations, Christopher, Ryan, and Rose!

Another fun and exciting talk is brewing this month!
This May 27, 2026 (Wednesday), join us as we explore how neutrinos power up a supernova and uncover the fascinating physics behind some of the universeโs most explosive events. ๐ฅโญ
Our speaker is Jakob Ehring, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He earned his Bachelorโs and Masterโs degrees in Physics from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and completed his PhD in Astrophysics in 2024 at the Max Planck Institute for Physics.
His talk is titled, โThe Invisible Blast: How Neutrinos Power a Supernovaโ.

LOOK: SYZYGY member Miguel Sebastian Reyes organized a local event in Makati City titled, โSAY-lestial: Beyond Earthโ with the SAYO - San Antonio Youth Organization last May 10, 2026.
He was joined by fellow member Clyde Asthore Bolantes, who delivered a lecture on telescopes and instrumentation.
The event began with a film showing, followed by the lecture, and concluded with a free telescope viewing session around the area.
Congratulations on a successful event and on your continued pursuit of bringing science and astronomy closer to the public!
