Whether it is okay to use a 100W charger depends entirely on the device you are plugging it into, but in most modern cases, it is perfectly safe.
Here is the breakdown of how it works and what you should consider:

The "Pull" vs. "Push" Rule
The most important thing to understand about modern electronics is that devices pull power; chargers do not push it.
If you plug a smartphone that only supports 25W into a 100W charger, the phone will only "request" and take 25W.

The charger acts like a reservoir. Just because a reservoir holds millions of gallons doesn't mean your kitchen faucet will explode when you turn it on; the faucet only takes what it's designed to handle.

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)
Most 100W chargers use a protocol called USB Power Delivery. This involves a "handshake" between the charger and the device.
When you plug them in, they communicate to determine the maximum safe voltage and current.
If the device doesn't recognize the charger or isn't compatible with high speeds, it defaults to a standard, slow charging rate (usually 5W) to protect the battery.

When to Be Careful
While it is generally safe, there are three scenarios where you should double-check:

Cable Quality: To actually achieve 100W, you must use a cable rated for 5A (100W). Standard USB-C cables are often capped at 60W (3A). Using a low-quality or thin cable with a high-output brick can sometimes lead to excessive heat in the cable itself.

Cheap/Off-brand Chargers: High-wattage charging generates heat. Trusted brands include safety chips to manage this. Uncertified, extremely cheap "knock-off" chargers may lack these protections, risking a short circuit.
Small Gadgets: Very simple devices (like cheap rechargeable toys or some older Bluetooth headphones) occasionally lack sophisticated charging controllers. While rare, these can sometimes overheat if forced onto a high-speed circuit, though most modern USB-C gadgets are designed to handle this.

Benefits of Using a 100W Charger

One Charger for All: You can use a single 100W brick to charge a laptop, a tablet, and a phone.
Future-Proofing: As batteries get larger and charging tech improves, having a high-capacity brick ensures you're ready for next-generation devices.
Cooler Operation: If you use a 100W charger to power a 45W laptop, the charger isn't working at its limit, which often means it stays cooler than a 45W charger running at 100% capacity.

Summary: If you are using a reputable brand of charger and a high-quality USB-C cable, it is completely safe and often more convenient.
