Scholar Spotlight: Nikki 🇵🇭🇺🇸
From Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine to UP Manila and the Philippine General Hospital, Nikki’s experience in the Philippines reflects how study abroad can strengthen both research and purpose.
Her work focused on pediatric brain tumors and quality of life, combining her interests in child neurology and health equity to help inform future research and policy for children with brain tumors in the Philippines and other low- and middle-income countries. 🧠⚕️
Beyond research, Nikki found joy in exploring the Philippines’ natural beauty and cultural diversity.

Meet Armando from Lehigh University, currently hosted by the University of the Philippines Diliman as a Fulbright researcher 🇵🇭📚
During his stay in the Philippines, Armando traveled across 9 administrative regions to meet with public school heads, foreign language teachers, and Fulbright alumni. Through these experiences, he gained a deeper appreciation for the Philippine public education system and the dedication of Filipino educators working across diverse communities.
Beyond research, one of his most memorable experiences was attending the “Tempus Est” concert of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, which he described as the best choral performance he has ever experienced.
Reflecting on his time in the Philippines, Armando shared:
“Every interaction is a learning experience; keep an open mind.”
From research and cultural immersion to music, travel, and new connections, his experience highlights the meaningful learning that happens both inside and beyond the classroom.

Program Feature: International Relations & Global Security in the Indo-Pacific 🌏🇵🇭

Scholar Spotlight: Erin 🇵🇭🇺🇸
From Rutgers University–New Brunswick to the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, Erin’s experience in the Philippines combined research, community engagement, and cultural immersion.
During her stay, Erin worked alongside local communities and medical students to:
🩺 Conduct free hypertension screenings across Metro Manila
💉 Advocate for accessible HPV vaccination programs for out-of-school youth
🤝 Support preventive healthcare education initiatives
Beyond academics, one of her most unforgettable memories was experiencing Sinulog Festival in Cebu City ❤️💛
“Standing in the huge crowd listening to mass outside of Basilica del Sto. Niño and watching everyone dancing in the streets was so beautiful and amazing to see.”
Her time in the Philippines also became a journey of personal growth, from reconnecting with her cultural identity and mother tongue to trying new experiences like surfing, free-diving, parasailing, and canyoneering 🌊
💬 Her advice to future students:
“Be open-minded and put yourself out there! Engage with locals, immerse yourself in the culture, and try new foods, hobbies, and experiences.”
