As a critical component of the broader research and development agenda aimed at accelerating coconut genetic improvement and enhancing the long-term sustainability of hybrid coconut production systems in Western Visayas, the Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP) of Capiz State University (CAPSU) conducted a series of coordinated field monitoring, technical evaluation, and nutrient management interventions across established hybrid coconut plantations in the provinces of Guimaras, Antique, and Aklan during May 2026. The activities were undertaken under Project 2 of the DOSTโ€“PCAARRD-funded research program, โ€œUtilization of Coconut Germplasm Collection at the Coconut Breeding Trial Unit (CBTU) for the Advancement of Coconut Hybridization in Western Visayas,โ€ through the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund (CFITF).

The field operations encompassed strategically established hybrid coconut monitoring sites in Aguilar, San Lorenzo; Concordia, Nueva Valencia; and Sta. Teresa, Jordan in Guimaras; Millamena, Sibalom and Tamayoc, Patnongon in Antique; and Tagas and Pudiot, Tangalan in Aklan. These sites serve as important field laboratories for assessing hybrid adaptability, vegetative vigor, nutrient-use efficiency, and growth performance under diverse agroecological conditions. Comprehensive evaluations were undertaken to document plantation health status, quantify developmental parameters, identify production constraints, and generate empirical data necessary for refining hybrid management protocols and strengthening location-specific production recommendations.

Complementing the monitoring activities, fertilization interventions were implemented following nutrient management schedules designed to optimize palm establishment, enhance nutrient acquisition efficiency, and support sustained physiological development.

The CAPSU CHP team, headed by Dr. Salvacion J. Legaspi, CHP Program Leader and Vice President for External Affairs and Linkages of CAPSU, provided technical advisories to farmer-cooperators on fertilizer stewardship, farm maintenance practices, moisture conservation measures, and site-specific crop management strategies to maximize plantation productivity and improve resilience against environmental variability and production-related stress factors.

Through sustained field surveillance, data-driven nutrient management interventions, and science-based extension support, CAPSU continue to advance a research-to-farm framework that strengthens the performance and adaptability of hybrid coconut populations. These initiatives underscore a shared commitment to fostering resilient coconut-based production systems, enhancing farmer capacity, and driving innovation-led growth toward a more competitive and sustainable coconut industry in Western Visayas.

Her discussion focused on the guiding principles of hybrid coconut production, identification of suitable intercrops, efficient land utilization, and the adoption of sustainable production strategies to improve productivity and farm income.

Subsequent sessions covered key areas such as farm maintenance, harvesting and postharvest handling, and pest and disease management. These were facilitated by CHP project staff and technical aides, who provided detailed discussions on plantation management practices and integrated pest management strategies to ensure healthy, resilient, and productive hybrid coconut farms.

In the afternoon, participants proceeded to the Coconut Breeding Trial Unit for the field visit and actual demonstration. The activities included the actual demonstration of hybrid coconut-based cropping establishment, assisted by Mr. Jolly Fe L. Launio, Project Laborer. The actual identification of pests and diseases was led by Ms. Noren Mae E. Felipe and Ms. Heralyn D. Paderes โ€“ Project Technical Aides โ€“ who guided participants in recognizing common field problems and appropriate control measures. In addition, the establishment of log traps as part of integrated pest control strategies was demonstrated by Mr. Raymund Lizada, Project Laborer.

The training concluded with the awarding of certificates and closing remarks delivered by Dr. Salvacion J. Legaspi, Vice President for EAL and Program Leader of CAPSU-CHP. She underscored the importance of sustaining the demo farm as a functional learning and technology showcase site that will continuously serve farmers, students, and agricultural practitioners across Western Visayas.

Through this initiative, Capiz State University reaffirmed its commitment to promoting agricultural innovation, enhancing human resource capability, and advancing sustainable coconut production systems in the region.
