Have you been caught by the Quezon Fever?
The newly released โ€œQuezonโ€ โ€” a 2025 Philippine epic historical drama โ€” reintroduces us to the life and legacy of the first President of the Commonwealth and the second President of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon.

The film has not only rekindled admiration for the โ€œFather of the National Languageโ€ but also sparked conversations about his life, leadership, and even the controversies that surrounded his time. Yet amid the spotlight on Quezon himself stood a woman whose quiet strength and compassion became her own enduring legacy: ๐——๐—ผรฑ๐—ฎ ๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ค๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜‡๐—ผ๐—ป, his wife, and one of the most influential women in humanitarian service.

Doรฑa Aurora Quezon was more than the First Lady of the Philippines. She was a humanitarian who embodied the ideals of service, humility, and integrity.
In 1947, when the Philippine National Red Cross (Philippine Red Cross or PRC as we know it today) was established as an independent organization, she became its first chairperson, leading efforts to provide relief, care, and hope to those devastated by war.

Born in Baler, Tayabas (now Aurora Province), she grew up in a family deeply rooted in faith and simplicity. Though often seen in the shadows of her husbandโ€™s political life, Doรฑa Auroraโ€™s name soon came to represent compassion and courage in her own right. She turned her influence into action by serving the poor, visiting hospitals, and ensuring that women and children affected by war were never forgotten.

Her leadership at the Red Cross came at a time when the country was rebuilding from the ravages of World War II. Under her guidance, the organization mobilized relief for thousands of displaced families and worked with international partners to help rebuild lives.

Doรฑa Auroraโ€™s sincerity and selflessness were more than mere words. As the widow of President Quezon, she was offered a government pension, but she declined it.

โ€œI feel that on account of โ€ฆ countless war widows and orphans โ€ฆ I should waive the collection of my pension โ€ฆ I cannot, in good conscience, receive โ€ฆ government assistance when so many of my less fortunate sisters and their children are not yet taken care of. . . . I know [if I accepted] I would not be keeping faith with the memory of my beloved husband,โ€ the first lady said in an interview with TIME Magazine on May 9, 1949.

This simple yet profound act reflected the core of her values โ€” integrity, compassion, and solidarity with the vulnerable.

On April 28, 1949, while on her way to inaugurate a hospital in her hometown of Baler, Doรฑa Auroraโ€™s convoy was ambushed in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija. Along with her daughter, Maria Aurora, and several companions, she was assassinated, a tragedy that shocked an entire nation that revered her for her goodness.

Her death marked a national day of mourning. Yet her name continued to live on, not only in history books but also in the province of Aurora, which was named in her honor, and in the countless lives touched by her compassion.

To honor her legacy, ensuring that the Philippine Red Cross remains guided by the principle of humanity, impartiality, and voluntary service, the ๐——๐—ผรฑ๐—ฎ ๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ค๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜‡๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—”๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ was created by the Philippine Red Cross.

The medal is one of the organizationโ€™s highest distinctions, granted only to volunteers who have demonstrated extraordinary service and sacrifice in the name of humanity. This recognition immortalizes her dedication and the spirit she brought into the Red Cross movement which is one of compassion without boundaries.

In an era where service is often overshadowed by self-interest and where humanitarian work is more vital than ever, Doรฑa Aurora Quezonโ€™s legacy remains profoundly relevant. Her leadership in the Red Cross was rooted not in power but in compassion, in the belief that serving others is the highest form of patriotism.

Doรฑa Aurora Quezonโ€™s life reminds us that true leadership begins with empathy. Her story is not merely a chapter in history but a continuing call to todayโ€™s youth and volunteers โ€” to serve without expecting reward and to live with compassion at the heart of every action.

As the Red Cross Youth Month unfolds, may her legacy inspire all who wear the Red Cross emblem to remember:

So, as Quezon the film reignites our national pride, let it also remind us of the heart behind the man โ€” Doรฑa Aurora Quezon, the nationโ€™s First Lady of Compassion and the enduring spirit of the Philippine Red Cross โ€” one who proved that true leadership is not defined by position, but by purpose.

This Global Handwashing Day, we, the Red Cross Youth, unite to promote one simple yet powerful act: washing hands with soap and water. ๐ŸŒ

Clean hands are more than just a routine. They serve as a shield that protects us, our families, and our communities from diseases. Every wash is a step toward a healthier and safer world. ๐ŸŒ

Let us make proper hand hygiene a daily commitment at home, in school, and wherever we go. In every clean hand lies compassion, responsibility, and the power to save lives.
