This is why the absence of the annual Institute Days is worth questioning.
We recognize the concern that Institute Days may disrupt classes. Missing regular class hours can affect lessons, schedules, and academic plans. Teachers have limited time to cover their subjects, and students are expected to complete the required competencies within a given period. From an academic standpoint, the concern is valid. No student would want an activity to become a reason for lessons to be rushed or requirements to pile up.
However, Institute Days do not happen every weekโor even every month. They are a rare occasion when students are given an opportunity to step away from the usual academic routine. For many students, it is one of the few times they can interact with classmates outside the classroom, support their respective institutes, participate in activities, showcase their talents, and build friendships. More importantly, it provides something that cannot be measured by grades: a chance to breathe.
A temporary disruption in the academic schedule should not automatically mean that the event has no value. Classes can be adjusted, lessons can be planned around the schedule, and academic activities can be properly coordinated. What cannot easily be replaced is the opportunity for students to create memories and strengthen their sense of belonging to the school community.
Students are not machines designed to continuously absorb information and produce outputs. We get tired. We become overwhelmed. We need moments where our minds can rest from the pressure of constantly having to perform. Taking a break does not mean taking education less seriously. In fact, rest can help students return to their responsibilities with renewed energy and focus.

CHED Memorandum Order No. 09, Series of 2013, on Enhanced Policies and Guidelines on Student Affairs and Services, states that higher education institutions should provide ๐จ๐ฉ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ-๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐จ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐จ๐๐ง๐ซ๐๐๐๐จ that support academic instruction and facilitate ๐๐ค๐ก๐๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ก๐ก-๐ง๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐๐๐ ๐จ๐ฉ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก๐ค๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฃ๐ฉ. This means that activities outside ordinary classroom instruction can have legitimate educational value when they contribute to studentsโ development as responsible citizens and future leaders. Institute Days, when properly planned and coordinated, can therefore be understood not merely as a break from classes, but as part of the broader student experience that complements academic learning.

The law requires educational institutions to develop policies and programs that promote mental health, identify students who may be at risk, and provide access to appropriate support and psychosocial services. It further directs CHED and other education agencies to pursue strategies that promote mental health and well-being in educational institutions. While the law does ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ก๐ฎ ๐ง๐๐ฆ๐ช๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ฉ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐จ, its broader principle is clear: student welfare and mental well-being are legitimate responsibilities within education. Creating reasonable opportunities for social connection, recreation, and recovery can therefore complementโnot compete withโthe academic mission of a college.

A 2026 systematic review of 50 studies identified academic workload, time pressure, prolonged study demands, and high performance expectations as important risk factors for student burnout, while social support, healthy learning environments, and effective coping strategies emerged as protective factors. Another systematic review and meta-analysis involving 2,462 students found evidence that interventionsโincluding mindfulness and other psychological approachesโcan reduce student burnout. These findings do not mean that every academic break automatically prevents burnout, but they reinforce a practical point: If colleges can protect academic standards while creating occasional, purposeful opportunities for students to reconnect, recharge, and participate in campus life, they may help students return to their academic responsibilities with greater energy and resilience.
Institute Days should therefore not be viewed simply as an interruption to classes. They should be seen as part of the student experience. Education is not confined to lectures, examinations, and requirements. It also happens through collaboration, camaraderie, leadership, competition, and shared experiences.
Yes, Institute Days may take time away from the classroom. But if they happen only rarely, perhaps the better question is not, โWhy should classes be disrupted?โ but rather, โCan we make room for students to rest without compromising their education?โ
The answer should be yes.
Because sometimes, giving students a day to breathe is not taking them away from learning. It is giving them the strength to keep learning.
