Novena in honor of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica
Day 5: Freedom
Augustine realized that his strong desire for excellence, his wanting to be applauded for his achievements was a form of slavery. His realization of this truth of becoming enslaved to his passions cameabout with his encounter with the Word of God in Scriptures. This encounter made him realize that freedom is not something achievedby one's own powers. Rather it is a gift from the God who loves him and loving him, wants him to be free. (Ten Augustinian Values; Fr. Esmeralda, OSA)
In our own personal histories, God is constantly inviting us to move out of the land of our enslavements and slavery. If we look back on our lives, we can see how God guided us to a greater spiritualfreedom.
Opening Prayer:
God of love, you liberated your chosen people to move out from the land of slavery to the land of freedom. Give us the grace to appropriate the FREEDOM given by Christ in the spirit of LOVE, "not as slaves under the law, but as those living in freedom under grace," as we serve the needs of all and be God's presence in our worldto-day, (St. Augustine: Tract. In10.7:8) through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Reading: Galatians 5:13 - 15
For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as anopportunity for self indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, you shall love your neighbour as your-self. If,however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
The word of the Lord.
Novena Prayer to St. Monica
Faithful God, light of all hearts, We praise you for Saint Monica, Woman of living faith and reconciling love. She nursed her son, Augustine, on the name of Jesus, and urged him tirelessly to a Christian way of life.
In answer to her prayers for his conversion, You gave her greater joy than all her tears had dared to ask. Hear our prayers (mention your petitions) As you once captivated the heart of Augustine, so now draw our hearts to You, Beauty ever ancient, ever new. Amen.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, your servant St. Augustine taught us that we are no longer under the law. We are under grace which, in making us love whatthe law commands, can reign over us as free people. (on continence 3,8) - Van Bavel p. 77 Grant, dear Lord, that throughyour grace, we may enjoy the childlike freedom to fulfil Your law which is to live together in Christian love, in holiness and infreedom as best proclamation to spread the life-giving aroma of Christ. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer for Augustinian Spirituality
God, the desire of every human heart, You moved St. Augustine to seek restlessly for truth and peace. Touch our hearts with his burning desire for wisdom, for the Word-made flesh. God of truth and justice, You laught Augustine to love unity and common life. Give us a share in his thirst for unity and make us one in mind and heart. God, our shepherd, You made Augustine a faithful pastor of your flock. Guide us, like him to serve all people, as we make our way to your kingdom. God, in whom we find our rest, renew in us the desire to follow Jesus and His servant Augustine. Listen to our prayers especially this one (mention your in-tentions). Keep us faithful to our promises until at last we find our rest in you. Amen.
