Novena in honor of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica

Day 5: Freedom

Augustine realized that his strong desire for excellence, his wanting to be applauded for his achievements was a form of slavery. His realization of this truth of becoming enslaved to his passions cameabout with his encounter with the Word of God in Scriptures. This encounter made him realize that freedom is not something achievedby one's own powers. Rather it is a gift from the God who loves him and loving him, wants him to be free. (Ten Augustinian Values; Fr. Esmeralda, OSA)

In our own personal histories, God is constantly inviting us to move out of the land of our enslavements and slavery. If we look back on our lives, we can see how God guided us to a greater spiritualfreedom.

Opening Prayer:

God of love, you liberated your chosen people to move out from the land of slavery to the land of freedom. Give us the grace to appropriate the FREEDOM given by Christ in the spirit of LOVE, "not as slaves under the law, but as those living in freedom under grace," as we serve the needs of all and be God's presence in our worldto-day, (St. Augustine: Tract. In10.7:8) through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Reading: Galatians 5:13 - 15

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as anopportunity for self indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, you shall love your neighbour as your-self. If,however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

The word of the Lord.

Novena Prayer to St. Monica

Faithful God, light of all hearts, We praise you for Saint Monica, Woman of living faith and reconciling love. She nursed her son, Augustine, on the name of Jesus, and urged him tirelessly to a Christian way of life.

In answer to her prayers for his conversion, You gave her greater joy than all her tears had dared to ask. Hear our prayers (mention your petitions) As you once captivated the heart of Augustine, so now draw our hearts to You, Beauty ever ancient, ever new. Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, your servant St. Augustine taught us that we are no longer under the law. We are under grace which, in making us love whatthe law commands, can reign over us as free people. (on continence 3,8) - Van Bavel p. 77 Grant, dear Lord, that throughyour grace, we may enjoy the childlike freedom to fulfil Your law which is to live together in Christian love, in holiness and infreedom as best proclamation to spread the life-giving aroma of Christ. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Augustinian Spirituality

God, the desire of every human heart, You moved St. Augustine to seek restlessly for truth and peace. Touch our hearts with his burning desire for wisdom, for the Word-made flesh. God of truth and justice, You laught Augustine to love unity and common life. Give us a share in his thirst for unity and make us one in mind and heart. God, our shepherd, You made Augustine a faithful pastor of your flock. Guide us, like him to serve all people, as we make our way to your kingdom. God, in whom we find our rest, renew in us the desire to follow Jesus and His servant Augustine. Listen to our prayers especially this one (mention your in-tentions). Keep us faithful to our promises until at last we find our rest in you. Amen.

Novena in honor of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica

Day 4: Augustine in Prayer

The basic law of prayer, according to St. Augustine, is that "when you pray to God in Psalms and Songs, the words spoken by your lips should also be alive in your hearts.โ€ St. Augustine. There has to be harmony between lips and heart, between the exterior and the interior, between theory and practice, the ideal and the life.

Our prayer should be part of our deepest selves and our life should witness to our ideal. The essence of prayer is to be sought at the heart of Jesus' message, and that means in faith, hope and love. When we really believe, hope and love, then there springs up in us a deep yearning which, according to Augustine, is at the heart of all true prayer. (Tarsicius Van Bavel, Commentary on the Rule of St. Augustine)

Opening Prayer:

God of love, you taught your disciples to pray. As we strive to interiorize St Augustine's spirit of prayer and action, teach us to pray and recognize your presence in all that we do, in our exterior and in our interior life, especially in our daily encounter with you in the Holy Eucharist. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Reading: Luke 11: 1-4

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples."

He said to them When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Faithful God, your disciples were inspired by your example to pray unceasingly. Grant that we may progress in our pure and honest longing to pray and grow with greater vitality in faith, hope and love, expressed in the harmony of our words and what we hear in our hearts. May the fruit of our prayer deepen our love for one another, a measure of the authenticity of our love for God.

Novena in honor of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica

Day 3: Humility

For Augustine humility is the foundation of charity, its dwelling and the way to it. It is where the community is built and through which it can grow. Humility goes together with dignity for it does not consist of putting ourselves down, having a poor self-image of ourselves, our failing to appreciate our God-given talents and other gifts, for he said "No one is telling you: Be less than you are" (Sermon 160)

If you praise the works of God, then you will also have to praise yourself for you too are a work of God. Praise not yourself, but God in you. Offer praise, not because you are this or that kind of a person but because God made you; not because you are capable of doing this or that, but because he works in you and through you. (En. In Ps. 144, 7)

Opening Prayer:

Lord God, you taught us that all who exalt themselveswill be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Teach us to be humble, for there is no unityin community without humility, and there is no lovewithout the openness of humble patience, for "where humility reigns, there is love, (sermon on the 1st letter of John), where you live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Reading: Luke 14:7-11

When he noticed how the guests chose the place of honour, he told them a parable. When youare invited by someone to a wedding ban-quet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invitedboth of you may come and say to you, "Give this person your place, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.

But when you are invited, go and sit down to the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, "Friend, move up here", then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves willbe humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Closing Prayer:

Loving God, how deep is that mystery hidden in thesecret recesses of your Being! Heal my eyes that I may rejoice with you in your light. In your unfathomable mercy you first gave the humble certain pointers to thetrue Mediator, that by his example we might learn evena humility like His. (Confessions p. 311, 286) Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Novena in honor of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica

Day 2: Unity in Community

In the community, God is to be sought, possessed and honoured in every member. It is an act of worship of God and it urges a life of sharing, praying together, working together, concern for one another and missing the absence of others.

This community is patterned from the life of the Apostles 'gathered together and had all things in common with the belief to live with one mind and one heart.

With this view of community life, let us examine ourselves in our present day community living. The principal goal of an Augustinian-oriented community is building up of a loving, welcoming, support-ive, caring and challenging fraternity. (Fr. T. Tack, OSA)

Opening Prayer:

Lord our God, you have revealed to St. Augustine the beauty of community life that is rooted in you. Grant that we may grow and build a community where there is oneness in searching and communion in love.

May we achieve the pertection to live together in harmony with one mind and one heart on the way to God and grow in love toward the kingdom of God. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 23-24; 31-33

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in body of Christ?

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. All things are lawful, but not all things are ben-eficial. All things are lawful, but not all things build up. Do not seek your own advantage, but that of others. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, so that they may be saved.
The word of the Lord.

Closing Prayer:

Triune God, the paradigm of community, grant that our holy commitment be concretized by living our common life in unanimity of purpose in concord among all.. Let each member of our community be a source of great joy for others (Theodore Tack) and for the Church as you teach us to listen to the Apostle saying "Bear one another's bur-dens: This is how you will fulfil the law of Christ" (Gal 6:2) We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Augustinian Spirituality
