𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝟏: 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 🌱✨

Advancing knowledge for a sustainable future, the third-year Environmental Science students successfully conducted 𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐓 𝟐.𝟎, virtually bringing students and experts together in a meaningful exchange of ideas and research insights via Zoom and Facebook live.

The morning session opened with an inspirational message from 𝐃𝐫. 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐨 that set the tone for the day, emphasizing the role of student-researchers as the "protective skin" or balat of our environment.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐳, 𝐋𝐏𝐓 from De La Salle University and 𝐉𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐆. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐳 𝐃𝐫. 𝐫𝐞𝐫. 𝐧𝐚𝐭 from the Department of Biological Sciences University of Santo Tomas served as guest speakers.

Dr. dela Paz shared “𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡: 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬,” where she reflected on her journey in research, highlighting the driving forces behind scientific inquiry and the insights gained from freshwater ecosystems. She remarked, “𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵,” noting that failure remains an inevitable part of the research process. Following this, Dr. Chavez delivered his talk, “𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚 & 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬,” focusing on the classification and evolutionary relationships of these plant groups, and underscoring the importance of systematics in understanding biodiversity.

Adding a touch of melody to the scholarly atmosphere, guest performer 𝐉𝐢𝐦 𝐊𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐕. 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐚𝐥, vocalist from the CBEA Magnates Band captivated the audience with a musical intermission. The event concluded with an engaging open forum and formal closing remarks from the project head of BALAT 2.0 𝐌𝐫. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜 𝐆𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐃𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐧, where students and faculty reflected on the day’s learnings, fostering a deeper sense of collaboration and commitment to scientific excellence. 📖

Every great story of sustainability starts with a single page of research. We are honored to introduce the experts who will be guiding our narrative at this year’s conference. 🌱⁣

👩🏻‍🔬 𝐃𝐫. 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐳, 𝐋𝐏𝐓⁣
Principal Investigator of the Freshwater Systems Ecology Laboratory (FSEL). A specialist in freshwater science, aquatic food web dynamics, and plankton community ecology, she holds a Ph.D. in life science at National Taiwan University (2023) and an M. Sc. in biological sciences at the University of Santo Tomas (2015). Her research extensively explores the impacts of environmental factors, such as tropical cyclones and aquaculture, on freshwater ecosystems and plankton trophic relationships.⁣

Dr. dela Paz is a multi-awarded scholar and researcher, notably receiving the 2023 Dean’s Award from the National Taiwan University College of Life Science and the 2024 ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge award from the UNDP. She is a recipient of the Balik Scientist Program Award 2024 for mid-term engagement from DOST-PCAARRD. Her work is widely published in high-impact journals, including Freshwater Biology and Zoological Studies, reflecting her commitment to advancing ecological data and freshwater resource management.⁣

🧑🏻‍🔬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐉𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐆. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐳, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐫𝐞𝐫. 𝐧𝐚𝐭.⁣
A faculty member at the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science, University of Santo Tomas (UST). A specialist in plant systematics and taxonomy. He holds a Master of Science in Molecular Biology at the University of Santo Tomas and a Doctorate at the University of Bayreuth in Germany.⁣

Dr. Chavez has authored numerous taxonomic novelties, including the description of the new genus Achilleanthus and several species in the genus Timonius. His professional contributions include the preparation of botanical illustrations and extensive field observations across the Philippines.⁣
