Southern Philippines Agribusiness and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST)-Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDC) Assistant Professor Elizabeth Joy S. Quijano was one of the esteemed speakers during the National Youth Volunteers Summit 2025 on November 15 at Tagum City Cultural Center. 200 young Filipino volunteers gathered at the summit to gain more understanding on the true essence and relevance of volunteering. Asst. Prof. Quijano shared her experience on her personal journey as an indigenous people's advocate, pioneer of cultural community libraries, volunteer, writer, and educator. "In volunteering, there will be challenges, from your family, friends and even from yourself, but you need to be consistent by being self-aware with high sense of self-appraisal," Quijano said. The event was organized by Youth Service Philippines, supported by the Tagum City Local Government Unit.

Tagum City First District Congressman De Carlo L. Uy also gave his message for the young volunteers as well as Arnauld Peral, United Nations Resident Coordinator.

The Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Development Communication (IASDC) conducted its first-ever research colloquium on May 6, 2024 at the SPAMAST-Buhangin Campus, Audiovisual Room anchored on the theme “𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.”

IASDC Dean, Dr. Elenito P. Bugawisan welcomed the plenary speaker, panelists, student-researchers, faculty and staff and optimistically shared his message of encouragement to foster a robust research culture on agricultural and development studies. Dr. Bugawisan also shared his vision on the success of more studies that contribute to the progress of communities in the province.

The plenary speaker, Assistant Professor Elizabeth Joy S. Quijano said during her speech, “In doing, revising, editing your research paper, you do not only learn or gain knowledge but it’s the attitude that matters, because in your research you learn to be resourceful, to be resilient, which also in turn, makes you humble, and patient. In research we learn not only knowledge but also values. Our personal values like honesty, patience, humility will eventually lead us to excellence.”

Panelists who served as judges to the research and policy brief presentations were Dr. Ariel E. San Jose of SPAMAST-OIAL, Engr. Reymart N. Ebarsabal of ABE Department of the Provincial Agriculture Office, and Municipal Agrociulturist Evelyn Gildore, MPS. The following students emerged as victors for the research, policy brief, and poster categories:
