On July 18, 2026, environmental advocates, youth leaders, and community members gathered at the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) Hall for KALIKASAN 2026—an eco-summit dedicated to empowering local communities and inspiring actionable change for our planet.
The morning began with an opening prayer, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the Malita Hymn. Inspiring opening messages from Uno Alfonso Baribar and Greggory Marquez then set a unified tone of stewardship and hope for the day’s activities.
The heart of the session kicked off with an eye-opening presentation titled "Plastic vs. People: Building a Sustainable Future Together," led by Uno Baribar. His talk shed light on the devastating impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, specifically highlighting the tragic reality faced by sea turtles. Because floating single-use plastics closely resemble jellyfish and marine plants, sea turtles frequently ingest them. This leads to severe internal blockages, false fullness that causes starvation, and fatal entanglements. The discussion emphasized that land-based plastic waste inevitably flows into our seas, stressing that protecting marine life requires immediate, collective action to break our reliance on single-use waste.
Continuing the momentum, Ms. Anabella V. Antoque, Ecosians Moderator, delivered her talk, "Environmental Warriors: Leading Change for a Sustainable Future," urging participants and youth leaders to step up as proactive guardians of nature. The session at the SB Hall concluded on a high note with an inspiring message from Leo Angelo Labis, Co-founder of Holy Ecosians, who reminded everyone that small, conscious actions today lead to massive environmental victories tomorrow.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening leg of this journey! Together, let us continue to choose our planet and build a sustainable future for all! 🌿🐢🌊
