The Apu Palamguwan Cultural Education Center (APC) is a community-based, Jesuit-supported organization that operates indigenous schools in the uplands of Bukidnon in northern Mindanao, Philippines. The Pulangiyēn, an indigenous community in the village of Bendum, expressed a desire for a school and welcomed the opportunity to work with an organization that could help them with their efforts. An initial literacy program in the 1990s developedinto a full-fledged elementary and high schoolcurriculum that educates Pulangiyēn children within the context of their culture and prepares them for life in their gaup (pronounced ga-oop), the domain in which they live.

Rita Guerra from Portugal shares her reflection of her brief time in Bendum:

"Bendum was, without a doubt, one of the experiences that has had the greatest impact on me so far. It made me look within, look at others and at the world through different eyes. It awakened in me an even greater desire to do more and do better, to grow and to make a difference.

It made me realise that I have a calling. It shed light on it. It gave me the courage to follow it. And, above all, it planted a seed within me that I hope to nurture when I return to Portugal. I hope to remain true to all the very special people I met in Bendum, because, in one way or another, they also helped me to discover myself. For their sake, I want to make the most of this freedom I have been given, and I pray that, one day, they too may experience it to the same extent."
