Young Journalists Take Center Stage at DSPC Malaybalay City
SUMPONG, MALAYBALAY CITY — Pens, cameras, microphones, and creative minds came together as young campus journalists from Can-Ayan Integrated School joined fellow student journalists in the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) of the Malaybalay City Division, held at Sumpong Central School.
Carrying the theme “Critical, Principled and Accountable Journalism,” the DSPC provided a meaningful venue for campus journalists to demonstrate their skills, sharpen their craft, and embrace the responsibility that comes with telling stories that matter.
Representing Can-Ayan Integrated School were members of the school paper staff who competed in various Filipino and English journalism categories. Among the events were Editorial Writing, Column Writing, News Writing, Feature Writing, Copyreading and Headline Writing, Science and Technology Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Photojournalism, and Radio Broadcasting.
For these young journalists, the competition was more than simply putting their skills to the test. It was an opportunity to transform ideas into meaningful stories, capture moments through images, create compelling headlines, and communicate information with accuracy and purpose.
Behind every contestant was a team of dedicated coaches who guided and encouraged the young writers throughout their preparation.
Shiela G. Seblian served as coach for the Filipino events, providing guidance and support to the participants as they prepared to compete in their respective categories.
Odessa J. Tandayag coached Editorial Cartooning, Science and Technology Writing, Copyreading and Headline Writing, and Feature Writing, helping contestants refine both their creativity and technical skills.
Evangeline Paradero handled News Writing, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, clarity, and responsible reporting.
Angeline B. Delos Reyes handled the Radiobroadcasting- English, honing young and talented broadcasters.
Meanwhile, Ruth Same coached Column Writing and Editorial Writing, guiding the participants in expressing well-founded opinions and developing thoughtful perspectives on issues that matter.
As the school paper staff of Can-Ayan Integrated School, the contestants carried not only the name of their school but also the responsibility of becoming young communicators who understand the value of truthful, fair, and accountable journalism.
The DSPC theme served as a reminder that journalism is not merely about winning contests. It is about asking critical questions, standing by principles, and being accountable for the information shared with others.
For the young journalists of Can-Ayan Integrated School, every article written, photograph captured, headline crafted, cartoon drawn, and broadcast delivered became another step toward becoming responsible storytellers.
The official results are still eagerly awaited, with some Can-Ayan Integrated School contestants making it into the Top 7 of their respective categories. Their names and rankings will be announced in a separate post.
Whatever the final results may be, the experience has already given these young journalists something beyond medals and recognition—the confidence to use their voices, the discipline to seek truth, and the courage to tell stories that deserve to be heard.
