The event served as an introduction to the first semester of SY 2025โ2026 and an inspiring day of learning, connection, and motivation for those embarking on their graduate journey. Students from the Master of Arts in Sociology (MA-Socio), Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling (MA-GC), Master of Arts in English Language (MAEL), and Doctor of Philosophy in English Language (PhD-EL) programs attended the event.
The program opened with the singing of the National Anthem, prayer, and the BukSU Hymn. In her Welcome Address, Dr. Valdez captured the essence of graduate life by comparing deadlines to โ๐ข๐น๐๐บ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ต๐๐ฟ๐ฑ๐น๐ฒ๐โโchallenging but possible to overcome with determination. She reminded students that in graduate studies, curiosity is not just welcome but required, and that their mentors are there to guide and push them toward their fullest potential.
This message of shared growth was echoed by Dr. Manlagaylay, who delivered the rationale. She emphasized that the orientation was โ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ ๐ฌ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญโ that brings faculty and students together. Graduate studies, she said, is a transformative journey that lays the foundation for professional growth and underscores that education is โnot a solo endeavor but a shared journey within a community.
The introduction of faculty was led by Dr. Colegado, followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Abejuela. Dr. Abejuela highlighted that graduate education is anchored in research and extension and that CHED envisions graduate students as
The morning session was filled with meaningful discussions. Dr. Paulican shared about extension and community outreach, urging graduate students to translate knowledge into real community impact. Dr. Verbal talked about prioritizing mental wellness, helping students recognize and manage stress. Ms. Recente, Research Director, clarified research requirements, particularly on publication and REC standards. The session concluded with an open forum and the awarding of certificates.
The afternoon was dedicated to research mentoring. Dr. Gaylo guided the graduate students through the essential parts of a thesis or dissertation, while Dr. Luzano explored how generative AI can be used to sharpen research questions, objectives, and frameworks. Open forums and workshops kept the sessions interactive, allowing students to apply ideas and ask practical questions.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Salome L. Escalona, Program Chair of MAEL, emphasized that graduate education is about completing requirements and becoming ethical, innovative researchers, and committed professionals.
By the end of the day, the event left the graduate students motivated, reassured, and ready to embrace the challenges ahead. The orientation successfully set the tone for graduate education. This experience is marked by collaboration, curiosity, and commitment, where each student is pursuing a degree and contributing to sustainable development and meaningful community impact.
