DECLAMATION CONTEST MECHANICS
Objective:
The declamation contest is designed to help BNHS Students develop skills, confidence, and poise in public speaking. Additionally, public speaking will help teach participants how to organize thoughts, express ideas, and recognize participants for accomplishments they have made in a friendly and competitive atmosphere.
Mechanics:
1. The contest is open to all bona fide JHS students of BNHS, male or female, from Grade 7-10.
2. Each English teacher will conduct an elimination among classes handled and have only one (1) participant each (January 8-12, 2024).
3. Grade level elimination will be on January 15, 2024, at 12:30 PM, venue to be posted.
4. Participants shall search for the piece assigned to their grade level and will be delivered in not less than 2 minutes and not exceeding 5 minutes.
Grade 7: The voice of an orphan
Grade 8: A glass of cold water
Grade 9: Vengeance is not ours, it’s God’s
Grade 10: I killed him/her
5. Timing begins at the first word and stops at the last word. One point deduction from the overall score shall be given for every 30 seconds exceeding time.
6. The piece should be memorized. Notes and cue cards are not allowed during the contest.
7. Participants shall wear appropriate costumes and shall use props whenever necessary.
8. All participants must abide by the rules and mechanics of the contest.
9. Upon submission of the results to the committee, judge's decision shall be considered final and irrevocable.
Criteria:
Emotive interpretation and ex*****on 30%
Vocal aspect (variation, quality, clarity) 20%
Gestures and facial expression 20%
Appropriate costume and props 15%
Mastery 15%
Total 100%
a. How well the participant embodies the assigned character's personality, traits, and quirks.
b. Consistency in maintaining the character throughout the performance.
Dialogue Delivery (40%):
a. Clarity, expression, and effectiveness in delivering lines/dialogues.
Use of Props and Costumes (20%):
a. Creativity and relevance of props and costumes to the assigned character.
b. How well the props and costumes enhance the overall portrayal.
General Guidelines
1. The contest is open to all bonafide students of Bukidnon National High School from Grades 7-10.
2. Each section shall field a team of five (5) members. The whole class/ English teacher shall decide who shall act as:
a. anchor/s ( 1 male and 1 female )
b. reporter/s ( 2 )
c. Tech App (1)
*Note: Any of the team members can assume one or two positions/tasks as long as this would not be conflicting or awkward in relation to the outcome of the broadcast (example: an anchor can be a reporter at the same time (International News only) and can also be a news or infomercial writer).
3. The following materials and equipment will be brought by the team:
a. 1 laptop
b. 1 speaker (bluetooth)
ELIMINATION ROUND:
- January 9, 2023 at 7:30 am, Reading room.
- The team shall provide scripts for the judges.
CONTEST PROPER:
- January 12, 2023 at 8:00 am, Reading Room
4. A 5-minute radio broadcast, that includes an infomercial, which may depict health, environment, politics and social issues, and five (5) news articles, which may be based on press releases, raw data, or latest news such as; local, national, international, sports and showbiz. The infomercial shall have a maximum length of (1) minute and shall use the language that the group is competing in. Each team should submit four (3) copies of the script. The team may print extra copies for their own use.
5. The script should not bear any information that may identify the school, division or region, but it should include the names of the members of the team with their job assignment/contribution (i.e. anchor, news presenter, etc.).
6. In case of power failure, the affected team shall be allowed to perform again.
7. The team who complied with the 5-minute production shall be given perfect score (5 points). In case of overtime or undertime, the following scheme of deductions shall be followed: Undertime/Overtime
• 1 second – 20 seconds – 1 point
• 21 seconds – 40 seconds – 2 points
• 41 seconds – 60 seconds – 3 points
• 61 seconds and above – 4 points
8. Scripts should be:
• encoded using Arial font size 12
• with directorial instructions in capital letters
• double-spaced with normal margin (linch on all sides)
• printed in A4-sized bond paper (8.27×11.69 inches)
9. The contestants shall leave the broadcast room right after their presentation.
10. The decision of the Board of Judges in all aspects of the contest shall be deemed final and irrevocable.

THEME: “Appreciating and Cultivating Students’ Love for English Language Skills and Literature”
BNHS- JHS English Department participates in DepEd’s 236,000 Trees - A Christmas Gift for the Children Project.
FEATURE WRITING GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA
1. The Feature Writing Contest is open to all Journalism students. Only two (2) students per teacher/curriculum will be given a chance to participate in the contest.
2. The contest proper shall be on January 12, 10:00 AM- 11:30 AM for Grades 7-10 at the Computer Lab.
3. The entry must be in English; the minimum number of words is 500. No maximum number of words is required. Below 500 words is subject to disqualification.
4. The maximum time to write the piece is one and a half (1.5) hour and will be judged on the following criteria:
Story Content/Subtance and Relevance to the topic -40 %
Grammar and Correct Usage of Words - 20%
Creativity, Style and Presentation -20%
Originality 20%
Total 100
5. The paper will be provided before the contest starts. Additional sheets of paper can be requested from the Key Person.
6. Contestants should not put any identifying mark on the contest entry or answer sheet other than the number provided to him/her.
7. The contestants will be given a Fifteen (15) minute brainstorming and after that they are required to keep silent while the contest is ongoing.
8. Should there be questions and assistance needed, the participants can only raise their concerns to the assigned proctor and/or examiner.
9. Violation of the stipulated guidelines will be grounds for disqualification of the participant.
10. The decision of the Board of Judges in all aspects of the contest shall be deemed final and irrevocable.
11. The winners of the contest will be announced during the Closing Program.
POSTER MAKING CONTEST
Eligibility:
1. The contest is open to all interested bona fide SPS and EBEP students of Bukidnon National, Grade 7 to Grade 10 who are enrolled in the current School Year 2022-2023.
Rules/Mechanics:
1. Entry pieces must illustrate an artistic interpretation of the theme “Scaling Up Across and Beyond Language & Literature Skills”
2. Each participant may submit 1 (one) accomplished entry.
3. Specifications:
a. Size: 1/2 illustration board
b. Medium allowed: Crayons/Oil Pastel/Colored Pencils
c. No identifying marks shall be allowed in all entries.
4. The actual contest shall start at exactly 7:30 am and finished at 11:30 this coming January 12, 2023.
5. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and Unappealable.
6. The output of the students shall be the property of the English Department.
7. Contestants must declare that his/her entry to the competition is his/her original work and has not been used or submitted to other competitions.
8. Contestants must declare that his/her entry does not infringe any 3rd party’s copyright. Any situation thay may arise pertaining to copyright infringement will be on the accountability of the participant.
9. Criteria for Judging:
a. Relevance to the theme - 40%
b. Originality- 20%
c. Aesthetic appeal - 20%
d. Message - 20%

GUIDELINES/MECHANICS FOR DIGITAL POSTER MAKING
January 9-12, 2023
1. The contest will be participated by Grades 7 to 10 SPA students.
2. There will be one chosen representative for each level after the elimination process.
3. Participants may use any editing applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator and the like.
4. The participants will design a digital poster related to the theme: THEME: SCALING UP ACROSS AND BEYOND LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE SKILLS, in conceptualizing the representations.
5. Any artwork on the poster must be originally designed.
6. The digital poster must be submitted to the gmail account ([email protected]) of the teacher-in-charge two a day before the due date.

8. Three individuals shall be declared as winners in the contest:
2nd Runner-up, 1st Runner-up, and the Grand Winner.
9. Winners will be posted in the official page of the English Department.
10. The decision of the Judges is irrevocable and final.
GUIDELINES FOR TV SCRIPT WRITING AND BROADCAST
PRE-CONTEST
1. Each group must have 2-3 members. The team shall decide who shall act as:
a. anchor/reporter
b. producer/director who could also act as floor director
c. video graphics editor/ video researcher/prod. Assistant/video journalist/camera man
*Note: Any of the team members can assume one or two positions/tasks as long as this would not
be conflicting or awkward in relation to the outcome of the broadcast (example: an anchor/reporter
can’t be a camera man at the same time. But a video editor can also be a camera man).
2. The following materials and equipment will be brought by the team:
a. 1 laptop with at least lOgb free space for video editing program (with uploading capacity)
b. two empty USB flash drives
c. at most two (2) digital cameras/phone cameras (without sim) which are compatible with
the laptop for the downloading of media
d. A4 bond paper and one printer with ink
e. at most three broadband sticks /pocket wifi, or one wireless router
f. extension cord
CONTEST PROPER:
A. SCRIPT WRITING
1. The team shall have the following components in their script:
a. Cover page: This shall contain the group’s name (mock TV network name)
b. News Articles: The contest organizers will provide five news articles. The team may cover
two (2) of these articles. Each news script should have video and audio component and
must not exceed 45 seconds when read during the contest proper.
c. Headlines: This will contain a brief lead/summary of the news articles.
d. OBB/CBB: Opening Billboard and Closing Billboard will contain the group’s assumed TV
network name. The script for the OBB /CBB should be included in the main script which
will be submitted to the judges.
2. two hours and 30 mins. will be allotted for the preparation of the script: 1 hour for the writing and
printing of the script; 1.5 hours for the shooting and editing of the videos. The teams will only be
allowed 1 hour to access the internet during the scriptwriting.
3. Once the scriptwriting contest has started, no member shall be allowed to leave the contest area.
B. TV BROADCAST SKILLS EXHIBITION
1. The order of presentation shall be determined by drawing of lots.
2. Only one laptop is allowed inside the studio.
3. The team will be given five (5) minutes to test the materials and equipment right before the actual live
broadcast presentation. In case of overtime/undertime, the following scheme of deductions shall be
followed:
1 second – 20 seconds – 1 point
21 seconds – 40 seconds – 2 points
41 seconds – 60 seconds – 3 points
61 seconds and above – 4 points
4. The TV newscast/segment must be delivered in three minutes.
5. After three minutes, the presenting team may continue their broadcast. However, a corresponding
deduction will be given. A team that delivers the broadcast under time will also be given a
corresponding deduction.
6. The team who complied with the 3-minute production shall be given perfect score (5 points).
7. The time keeper shall give the judges a copy of the record of the broadcast running time of each group.
The record should indicate the number of seconds/minutes each group went over/under time; if they
did.
8. An appropriate venue will be provided for the viewing of the live-feed of the presentation.
9. The decision of the Board of Judges is FINAL and IRREVOCABLE.
