Modal verbs are powerful linguistic resources that shape argumentation, express writer stance, and influence meaning in editorial discourse. 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐭 (4th Year BAEL Student) conducted a study published in the Vijoriya International Journal for Research & Innovation entitled “𝐋𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨-𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬.”

Guided by Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, the study examined the lexico-semantic use of modal verbs in editorials discussing the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against former President Rodrigo Duterte. Findings revealed that modal verbs such as will, should, and can were frequently used to express prediction, moral guidance, and capacity, while might, could, and would conveyed cautious speculation and hypothetical meanings. The study highlights how modal verbs serve as essential linguistic tools in constructing institutional voice, persuasion, and meaning-making in editorial writing.

Gender-neutral language has become an important aspect of inclusive communication in academic settings. 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨 (4th Year BAEL Student) conducted a study published in SiRad: Pelita Wawasan entitled “𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫-𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞: 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬.”

Using a convergent-parallel mixed-method design, the study examined the use of gender-neutral language in students’ academic writing and explored the sociocultural factors shaping its adoption. Findings revealed that students frequently used gender-neutral generic nouns and job titles, while gender-neutral pronouns were less commonly employed due to challenges in sentence restructuring. The study further identified awareness and knowledge, personal beliefs and values, cultural and societal norms, and globalized media as key influences on gender-neutral language use. These findings contribute valuable insights toward fostering gender-sensitive communication and inclusive language practices in academic contexts.

Polysemous words or words with multiple related meanings remain a significant challenge among language learners, particularly in selecting the correct meaning within context. 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐒. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐨 (4th Year BAEL Student) and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐏. Anchored on the Mental Lexicon Theory and Lexical Ambiguity Resolution frameworks, the study examined the most difficult polysemous words encountered by first-year BAEL students and explored the effectiveness of their meaning selection strategies. Findings revealed that contextual strategies significantly predict accurate meaning selection, emphasizing the vital role of context in vocabulary instruction, lexical processing, and reading comprehension development. This scholarly work contributes valuable insights to language education and applied linguistics by highlighting effective approaches in addressing lexical ambiguity among learners.
