CMU Journalism Students, Faculty Join 8th National Forum for Media and Information Literacy

Journalism students and faculty members attended the 8th National Forum for Media and Information Literacy (NFMIL) held at the Communication Foundation for Asia in Sta. Mesa, Manila last February 21, 2026. The forum was organized by the Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL).

The City of Malabon University was represented by the officers of Kapisanan ng Kabataang Periodista and CMU I-Connect, Journalism Program Chair Prof. Jen Tan, and Inst. Carlo Luis Candelaria.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Howie Severino, host of i-Witness, consultant of GMA Integrated News, and Editor-at-Large at GMA News Online. His talk, entitled “Media and Information Literacy in the Age of AI: A Modern Survival Skill,” emphasized that while artificial intelligence is increasingly used in media, it cannot replace journalists’ judgment and human lived experiences.

The forum also featured a panel discussion, “Beyond the Curriculum: Teaching MIL in Flexible, Real-World Contexts,” where educators and media practitioners shared ways of integrating media and information literacy in education and the media industry.

Open-Source Intelligence Analyst Mr. Gian Libot also shared insights on information sovereignty and digital literacy. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking, responsible information consumption, and mental health awareness when navigating misinformation and disinformation.

Participants also took part in a workshop that explored how to turn theory into practice, designing and applying media and information literacy lessons and activities in real-world contexts.

Through the forum, students, educators, and practitioners gained insights on verifying information, responsible use of digital tools, and the importance of media and information literacy in life and journalistic practice.
