Reading is one of the most important skills a child can develop, and starting early can have a profound impact on a child’s academic and personal growth. Early reading doesn’t just teach children to recognize words; it lays the foundation for critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning. According to the National Early Literacy Panel, skills such as print awareness, vocabulary, and phonological awareness (the ability to manipulate sounds in speech) are among the strongest predictors of later reading achievement.
The NELP’s research also found that early oral language proficiency — including complex vocabulary and grammar — has a large effect on later literacy outcomes. By helping children build these foundational skills before and during kindergarten, early reading experiences significantly increase their chances of becoming successful, confident readers.
