The Avenues, the official journal of San Carlos Seminary Graduate School of Theology is now accepting theological papers for its possible inclusion in Volume XXV, No.1.

Anong masasabi ng Simbahan tungkol sa pananagutan ng pamahalaan sa pangangalaga ng ating kalikasan?

Narito ang ilang piling salin mula sa Laudato Si’, ang Encyclical Letter ni Pope Francis tungkol sa pangangalaga sa ating iisang tahanan.

Sa pagsisimula ng Season of Creation, nawa'y maalala nating lahat na ang kalikasan ay kaloob ng Diyos na ipinagkatiwala sa atin. Hindi sapat ang pangako. Kailangan ang tunay na pagkilos. Ang pangangalaga sa kalikasan ay pananagutan nating lahat, ngunit ang may mas malaking kapangyarihan ay may mas malaking pananagutan.

𝐃𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐔𝐑𝐂𝐇: 𝐒𝐓. 𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐈𝐏𝐏𝐎

Augustine of Hippo is one of the Four Great Latin Fathers and known as Doctor of Grace. He was one the most distinguished theologians in the history of the Church and may have exercised more influence on the shape and character of Western theology, both Catholic and Protestant, than any other, including even Thomas Aquinas.

He was particularly affected by the Life of Antony by Athanasius. He wrote a letter on the ascetical life to a woman who would become the first “abbess” of a community of women he would later found and two sermons on the subject, which included elements that would form the basis of a famous Rule. These writings would influence Western monasticism and religious life for centuries to come, even down to the present day. He wrote four works of dialogues during this period as well as rebuttals of Manichaeism. One of his enduring sayings from this corpus of writings was his comment: “Do not try to understand in order to believe, but believe in order to understand” (On the Teacher 11.37). He was also especially influenced by the writings of St. Paul and drew particularly upon the Letters to the Galatians and to the Romans in his own Confessions.

As bishop of Hippo for the rest of his life, he devoted his episcopacy in preaching, writing, administering the sacraments, engaging in a broad range of other pastoral activities, presiding over synods and councils, and adjudicating civil as well as ecclesiastical cases—all while living ascetically in community with his clergy. He produced a number of major works during the course of his busy episcopate. They include not only the Confessions, but also his sermons on the Gospels, Epistles, and Psalms, the De Trinitate (Lat., “On the Trinity”), and the De Civitate Dei (Lat., “On the City of God”), completed toward the end of his life. His writings were especially influential in the development of the doctrines of creation (written against the Manichees), grace (written against the Pelagians), and the sacraments and the Church (written against the Donatists).

Only on the matters of predestination, sexual in*******se in mar- riage, and the relationship of Church and state was his thinking incon- sistent with the subsequent teaching of the Church. He died in 430 during the Vandals’ Siege of Hippo. Augustine was canonized through popular recognition and was later declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1298.

𝐃𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐔𝐑𝐂𝐇: 𝐒𝐓. 𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐔𝐗

St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153), Cistercian monk, abbot, and Doctor of the Church, was one of the most influential spiritual writers of the Middle Ages. Known as the “Doctor Mellifluus,” or “Honeyed Doctor,” he emphasized the transformative power of divine love and the soul’s intimate relationship with God. Through works such as On Loving God and his extensive sermons on the Song of Songs, Bernard profoundly shaped Catholic spirituality, particularly the theology of mystical union, contemplative prayer, and the love of God. His teaching presents the spiritual life as a journey from self-love toward a deeper, self-giving love of God, ultimately finding its fulfillment in union with Him.

The title "Doctor of the Church" honors saints who have made significant contributions to Catholic theology or doctrine through their writings. To bestow this dignity, the Pope must officially declare the saint, who must also display exceptional holiness and profound doctrinal insight. As of late 2025, the Church has recognized 38 saints with this title. However, this designation does not constitute an ex cathedra decree, nor does it guarantee that the saint's teachings are completely free of error.
