That was the simplest and only definition of social workers in our country. People often see them as individuals who just distribute relief goods during disasters, appearing to be insignificant. But social workers are far more than this oversimplified definition.
๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ is a ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป centered on helping, empowering, and supporting people, often in ways that go unseen and underappreciated. They develop programs and interventions designed to make life easier for those they serve.
The beauty of social work is that it can be applied to all walks of life, from the moment you are born to the time you say goodbye. Social workers are everywhere, and they play many important roles, including:
1. ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ต ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ: ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ - When a baby is born, social workers help families get the support they need. They connect families with doctors, healthcare services, and groups that offer advice and help. This ensures that parents have everything they need to care for their new baby and adjust to parenthood smoothly.
2. ๐๐ฑ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ๐๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐๐ด๐ฒ: ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ - During the teenage years, young people deal with many challenges, like fitting in with friends and figuring out who they are. Social workers help them navigate these tough times by offering support and advice. They provide counseling and programs that encourage personal growth and help teens make healthy choices.
3. ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ ๐๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ: ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ - As young adults begin making important choices about their lives and sometimes gets worn out in their lives, social workers help them find their way. From monitoring hazards to charting the country's resources, the learning tour to PAGASA and NAMRIA was an eye-opener to the strength of science and technology.
The tour started at PAGASA, wherein ISDNB students explored the complex interplay between atmospheric forces and the cutting-edge technology employed in forecasting weather phenomena. Seeing the high-tech equipment for themselves and learning about how meteorological competence has saved lives in natural calamities made a strong impression. The experience highlighted the important role played by forecasts in disaster preparedness and response.
At NAMRIA, the ISDNB students were introduced to the captivating world of cartography, wherein accurate mapping plays a significant role in infrastructure construction, environmental planning, and disaster response. The tour showed them how geospatial information apprise national planning and facilitates effective allocation of resources.
Through these two institutions, ISDNB students acquired in-depth knowledge on how science and technology improves national progress and security. This learning tour was a valuable experience, emphasizing the critical role of research and innovation in shaping a more resilient Philippines.
