To save a tooth is to save a life!

I am a Registered Dental Hygienist from the U.S and I am on an adventure living abroad in the Philippines where I have realized working in the controlled environment of the American dental practice to be only a slice of the pie to being an Oral Health Care Practitioner and I want to share my journey with you! This page is intended for knowledge sharing, learning, support and opportunity to make a

CDA January 2021 Journal 09/01/2021

Silver Fluoride CAN be used in deep lesions! Irreversible pulpitis is the only true dental contraindication. Time to get rid of these common misconceptions like ‘you can’t use SDF in deep lesions’ or ‘it’ll fry the pulp.’ It’s simply not true, and it’s nice to have another article to echo this point. Thanks Dr. Griffith and the CDA Journal! -Jeanette Maclean

CDA January 2021 Journal The January 2021 Journal of the California Dental Association covers a variety of topics including the use of silver diamine fluoride, caries risk assessment, luting cements and endodontic retrograde filling materials.

IO/EO Exam: How My Mother’s Thyroidectomy Changes My Perspective about Exam - Today's RDH 09/01/2021

The EO/IO is the most important quick and painless screening we can offer our patients and here is another reason why we cant skip this step of the clinical visit.

IO/EO Exam: How My Mother’s Thyroidectomy Changes My Perspective about Exam - Today's RDH The scary “C” word, cancer, could naturally cause a clouded judgment to anyone affected by it. You have a hard time seeing the light at the tunnel and question everything leading up to the diagnosis. “Why me?” “Am I going to die?” “No, are you sure?” These are all thoughts that could...

Temporarily out of the operatory but not the clinic! Thank you mom, and hygiene BFF's Tanya and Jacqueline for supporting my efforts abroad and sending these cool books to give the kids in a local reading program that supports their online education. It's a great opportunity to educate on oral hygiene homecare and benefits of fluoride. The kids are going to be thrilled with this surprise!

***Follow-up on Baby Ysabelle***
Due to Covid there were some barriers to Ysabelle getting her surgery on the initial scheduled date. The Barangay wouldn't allow them to leave without first quarantining in their home. After receiving her health certificate to travel and finally arriving at Band of Mercy she was found to have primary complex of Tuberculosis and sent home to await results of further tests. Today she has completed phase I of surgery for her lip and hopefully in the near future she will have her palate repaired 🙏🙏 She is thriving and happy! This will be life-changing!! Thanks to all the wonderful people who came together to gift this child with medical care 💗💗

How can we as hygienists make use of our skills during Covid? We raise awareness, facilitate and educate those most vulnerable and high risk for oral disease. Children in the Philippines have the highest incidence of tooth decay in all of Asia. Teeth for Health's diaper drive program gives the opportunity to share with these parents low cost oral care methods for their babies, talk about prevention, and share easy nutritional snacks options. It's not all about being in the op 🦷

The joy of learning to C-shape floss for the very first time is watching their faces light up at the end to get their freebies of floss, toothbrush, and toothpaste! The Covid-19 pandemic has caused thousands to be without dental access as many clinics have been closed since March. Interdisciplinary collaboration has opened the door to give one on one oral health education in a medical clinic and help facilitate care for those needing services outside of what we can offer. Increasing oral systemic knowledge 1 family at a time 💗💗
