Under Magnifying Glass Series 1 - The Fresh Start Effect: Temporal Landmarks Motivate Aspirational Behavior
The “Under Magnifying Glass” Series of the “Ma’am, May I go out?” page. The series will focus on research reviews and discussions. To begin the series and the year 2024, we will reference the Journal Article “The Fresh Start Effect: Temporal Landmarks Motivate Aspirational Behavior”
Learnings and Points of the Research
1. People, in general, tend to have higher motivation and drive to change, improve, and strive more to get their goal during their “Temporal Landmarks”.
2. Temporal Landmarks are significant periods in time of a person. Personal Events such as birthdays and new jobs. It can also be a socially constructed calendar partition like a new month, holiday, or a new year.
3. The study embraced the idea that there are 2 main factors why people do “Fresh Starts” during the Temporal Landmarks.
4. First, Create discontinuities in time perceptions that make people feel disconnected from their past imperfections. Our goal is to re-create/reinvent a better version of ourselves, embodying the “New year, New Me” mantra.
5. Second, Disrupt people’s focus on day-to-day minutiae, thereby promoting a big-picture view of life. Making better life patterns, routines, and choices that will ultimately land you to your big picture/ end goal.
6. In summarization, the change during these milestones revolves around the construction of a new and positive self-image, separation from past imperfections, and creation of better life routines.

Vision Board Series #1: Manifest! Manifest! Manifest! Repeat Until Its True! – “Vision Board”-ing 101
In a thick American accent, one author said, “Vision is the Picture of the Future that Produces Passion” in Filipino, courtesy of Google Translate “Ang Pananaw ay ang Larawan ng Kinabukasan na Nagbubunga ng Pasyon”
We are all dreamers, all visionaries pero we can’t deny the fact that sometimes reality does get in the way of getting our goals. Sa mga students, sometimes our strand or program is not what we truly want, pero we took it because our parents told us so or for employability. For professionals naman, usong-uso ang passion versus practicality, we do not like the line of work we are doing yet we are here for the money. These things can kill a man’s drive.
So to combat the mundane and routinely acts we do to survive, we need something that can remind us of our core, of our true passion, “Para saan ka ba talaga bumabangon?” effect.
A fun, creative and effective way to re-align ourselves in achieving our dreams and goals are through the use of Vision Boards. Katy Perry, Oprah or kahit si Mimiyuuh may vision board. As a person na dapat hindi nagpapatalo, ilabas na ang gluestick and let us create our own!
