Metro Cebu is stepping into a smarter era of public service with PLDT and Smart AI-in-a-Box, a digital empowerment initiative that brings artificial intelligence closer to communities through tools, connectivity, and capacity-building training.

The turnover of AI-in-A-Box to the local government of Cebu City was led by Roby Alampay, FVP and Head of PLDT and Smart Public Engagement and Corporate Communications, and Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart. Backed by the group’s social outreach arm PLDT-Smart Foundation, the program equips the city with an AI access kit, connectivity, and mentorship. The package includes a laptop, a smartphone, a connectivity device, and premium access to ChatGPT.

The rollout extends across Metro Cebu, including Lapu-Lapu City and Talisay City, which also received an AIAB package. All three cities have undergone training to build their AI capabilities. As one of the three pioneer participant cities in the country, Cebu City proudly represents the Visayas region in the AI mentorship and acceleration program, designed to help its offices turn ideas into practical AI solutions for faster, more responsive governance.

In his Facebook post, Mayor Nestor Archival welcomed the program, noting that it is heartening for Cebu City to be one of the three pioneer participant cities in the country and the only city from the Visayas to represent this mentorship-driven program. He added that through AI-in-a-Box and the support of the PLDT-Smart Foundation, the city continues to strengthen its use of innovation and AI solutions for faster, more efficient, and more responsive service for the people of Cebu.

PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) turned over “Ang Paglalakbay ni Tala” (The Adventures of Tala) books to the City Government of Ormoc to support the city’s mobile library program. Apart from nurturing children’s imagination and love for reading, the book also provides age-appropriate guidance to Ormocanon children on how to safely navigate the digital world.

“Ang Paglalakbay ni Tala” is a children’s storybook designed to help young readers understand their rights, practice online safety, and develop responsible digital citizenship. This effort is part of PLDT and Smart’s broader commitment under their pillar, which aims to equip children, families, and communities with the knowledge needed to foster a safer online environment.

PLDT, Smart connect farmers and small business owners with digital economy through Digital-PINAS

PLDT and Smart Communications, Inc. are helping farmers and small business owners build digital skills for today’s economy by supporting the Digital-PINAS (Inclusive, Competitive and Responsible Digital Philippines) initiative of the International Trade Centre.

The PLDT Group recently turned over connectivity devices that will help participants apply these new skills in their daily operations and expand their market reach online.

Beyond connectivity support, training modules from PLDT and Smart’s program have also been integrated into the Digital PINAS curriculum. Program recipients, which include farmers, fisherfolk, and small business owners, are learning practical tools to grow their livelihood — from basic photography and digital marketing, using online selling platforms to reach more customers, to learning how to protect themselves from various scams.

Digital-PINAS is a Joint Programme by the UN Joint SDG Fund with generous contributions from the European Union, to help expand digital inclusion opportunities for Filipino MSMEs. It is implemented by ITC, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), alongside key government agencies led by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Supporting the program highlights the PLDT Group’s efforts in narrowing the digital divide by integrating technology and digital innovations in capacity building and livelihood trainings to help improve the lives of Filipinos.
