ᴄᴜᴛɪᴇ ᴄᴏʟᴏɴɪᴇꜱ ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴜɴɪᴛʏ ꜱʜᴀʀᴇ: 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱 🐒🦠
𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱 is a rare viral disease caused by the 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. While it is related to the smallpox virus, monkeypox is generally less severe. There are two primary types of the virus: 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐈, which is associated with milder symptoms, and 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐈𝐈, which can lead to more severe illness. The disease was first identified in 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟖 during outbreaks in laboratory monkeys, leading to its name. However, it can also infect humans.
The virus spreads in several ways: (1) 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭: Through contact with infectious skin or lesions, including touching, kissing, or s*xual activity with an infected person. Healthcare workers are particularly at risk due to close patient contact; (2) 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬: Extended close contact with an infected person can result in transmission via droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking; (3) 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥-𝐭𝐨-𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Occasionally, the virus can spread from infected animals, such as rodents like squirrels and prairie dogs, to humans through handling or consuming these animals or their products.
A key symptom of monkeypox is a 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡 that starts as 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, progresses to 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐬, and eventually forms 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬. These lesions can be very itchy and may leave scars. Swollen lymph nodes are also a common feature. While most people recover completely, those with weakened immune systems or pregnant individuals may experience more severe symptoms, including potential transmission to their unborn babies.
Currently, there is 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 for monkeypox. Management focuses on supportive care to 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧, and 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Although smallpox vaccines might offer some protection against monkeypox, their effectiveness is still being evaluated.
Nevertheless, monkeypox can still be prevented through several measures: (1) 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭: Limit physical contact with infected individuals, especially during outbreaks; (2) 𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The smallpox vaccine may provide partial protection and is recommended for high-risk groups like healthcare workers; (3) 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Effective monitoring and prompt case identification are vital for controlling outbreaks; (4) 𝐈𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞: Isolate confirmed or suspected cases to prevent further spread; (5) 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Educate people about monkeypox and its transmission to help prevent infection.
Remember although monkeypox is relatively uncommon and usually less severe than smallpox, its potential for serious health issues and the complexities of how it spreads highlight the need for ongoing awareness, preventive measures, and prompt medical treatment. Staying updated on new information and adhering to preventive guidelines are key to effectively managing and reducing the effects of monkeypox.

It was reported today that the Department of Health detects one new monkeypox case in the Philippines.

This, following surveillance after WHO's declaration that it is a public health emergency of international concern.

Mpox is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus.

Signs and symptoms usually begin within a week but can start 1-21 days after exposure. Common symptoms are a skin rash or mucosal lesions which can last 2-4 weeks accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph does.

The rash begins as a flat sore which develops into a blister filled with liquid and may be itchy or painful. As the rash heals, the lesions dry up, crust over and fall off.

Some people may have one or a few skin lesions and others have hundreds or more. These can appear anywhere on the body such as the palms of hands and soles of feet; face, mouth and throat; groin and ge***al areas; and a**s.

Mpox spreads from contact with infected:
persons, through touch, kissing or s*x
animals, when hunting, skinning or cooking them
materials, such as contaminated sheets, clothes or needles
pregnant persons, who may pass the virus on their unborn baby
Laboratory confirmation of mpox is done by testing skin lesions material by PCR.

It can be prevented by avoiding physical contact with someone who has mpox. Vaccination can help prevent infection for people at risk.

For signs and symptoms of mpox please consult immediately in hospitals; stay home and isolate from others until all your lesions have crusted over, the scabs have fallen off and a new layer of skin has formed underneath.
