WHY GOOD EMPLOYEES QUIT

It's easy to assume that employees leave because of a higher salary somewhere else. But psychology tells us that the real reasons often run much deeper.

Most people don't walk away from a job overnight. They slowly disconnect when they no longer feel valued, respected, or supported.

One of the best explanations comes from Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory. Salary and benefits can prevent dissatisfaction, but they don't automatically create satisfaction. What truly keeps people engaged are opportunities to grow, meaningful work, recognition, and a sense that their contributions matter.

Another perspective is Self-Determination Theory, which suggests that people thrive when three basic psychological needs are met:

Autonomy - having some control over how they do their work.
Competence - feeling capable and challenged to grow.
Relatedness - feeling connected to supportive colleagues and leaders.

When these needs are consistently ignored, motivation begins to fade, even among the most talented employees.

Over time, chronic stress without enough support can lead to burnout. Emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a reduced sense of accomplishment make even passionate employees question whether staying is worth it.

The takeaway?

Good employees rarely quit because they suddenly stop caring. More often, they leave because they cared for too long without feeling appreciated, heard, or given the opportunity to grow.

Sometimes, retaining great employees isn't about offering more money. It is about creating a workplace where people feel they matter.
