Team Fun Guys Basketball

This page has been inactive for a while and for good reason. I’d like to say that writing this was hard - but it really wasn’t. While endings can be a little sad, it’s always what lies ahead that makes it all better and all the past experiences worthwhile.

Team Fun Guys Basketball is officially ending as a group and as a youth program. All future youth activities will now be under the Utak Atleta organization as we strive to get closer to the SBP’s vision for basketball - especially grassroots basketball - in the country.

Lots of memories have been made through this group and lots of friendships formed. We’ll keep this page up forever (or as long as Facebook will let us) as a reminder of all the times we shared together.

Too many people have been involved in this group and every single person has been important to the journey. There are 5 people that stand out:

Vincent Reblando - kasama ni Ty, you guys kept me honest. Nung simula di ko naman talaga alam kung ano ginagawa ko. Ang lagi ko nalang iniisip noon, anong magiging impact ng mga desisyon ko sa inyo at paano niyo ii-interpret yung mga nakikita niyo sa buhay ko. At dahil dun nag-grow ako as a coach and as a person. Maraming salamat Teng - always try to do what’s right, kahit mahirap.

AJ Delfin and Bhie-Jhay Arcangel - my ever loyal vets. Kulang ang thank you sa supportang binigay niyo sa akin - tama man o mali mga ginawa ko. Laging may chance maging competitive ang team kapag nasa lineup kayo. Thank you.

Toni Almonte - people may criticize you (and BUPH) for a lot of things but to me, you provided me an avenue to explore coaching and what I could do with my passion for basketball beyond the confines of my corporate life. I will be thankful for that and most especially (real talk lang) the financial safety nets to keep fielding teams in your leagues while juggling sponsors’ money.

Lastly, of course Tyrone who is now also part of Utak Atleta.

We’ve officially wrapped up our ’23-’24 program year (November 2023 to May 2024) last Sunday bowing out against the defending champions of Ballers United PH’s DLeague Division 1. The sting of the loss is still a little fresh to talk about basketball matters so today I want to focus on something that’s always good to express: gratitude.

No tags but I don’t think we can continue on without naming names.

Bea Manahan, Yanyan Abay, Beng and Ma**ca Llenado, JV and Kim Prado. Thank you for generously sharing your resources with us. Your contributions allowed us to operate comfortably for last 8 months providing access to a proper structured sports program covering costs of training facilities, jerseys, and competition fees.

Coach Trever Love for always being generous with your expertise in fitness. I can arguably say that in our 2 major competitions we were the best conditioned team across 30 teams.

Avis Teo for connecting us with Nature Spring and providing us with hydration that lasted us months.

We have stayed true and committed to maximizing your contributions and 100% of all your support went to the 20 athletes in our program. As we move forward we will continue to commit any support received 100% to our athletes.

Thank you for trusting me with your resources. I have seen tremendous personal growth in our athletes this year. I’ve seen their discipline in doing our conditioning program and their commitment to their education. I’ve also seen their capacity to endure. Towards the end of the season we had two athletes who lost a parent and a sister. Another had half their house lost to a fire. They continued to show up and play.

These athletes do not come from privileged backgrounds. My hope is that through sports, they learn skills and lessons that will help improve their lives in the years to come.

Lastly, to my wife who is instrumental in all of these, thank you for enabling me to do this and for keeping me accountable in order to do it well.
