The University of Makati School of Law’s Center for Clinical Legal Education and Legal Aid Services (CCLELAS) organized a legal aid Christmas outreach activity in Makativille, one of the city’s adopted communities situated in the heart of Calauan, Laguna

The activity highlights three seminar topics conducted by the University’s alumni-lawyers. The first topic is entitled “Lakas ng Pinansyal: Financial Literacy and Legal Empowerment.” The audience was given a number of tips in order to help them manage their finances including tips on how to save and budget while at the same time avoid becoming a victim of common modus operandi of scammers and criminals.

The second topic is entitled “Government Benefits available to Senior Citizens and Solo Parents. Benefits under PHIC, HDMF, and SSS.” Here, the beneficiaries were informed about the various governmental benefits given to the mentioned vulnerable
groups such as 20% discounts on restaurants and 5% discounts on groceries on essential items, among others.

The last topic is entitled “Use of Surnames, Change of Name, Cancellation or Correction of Entries in the Civil Registry.” In this topic, the participants were able to learn the process to follow in order to change clerical issues on their recorded name in PSA as well as have a working understanding the difference between administrative and judicial correction of names.

Concurrently, the alumni-lawyers of the University also provided pro bono legal services to everyone in need.

To further engage the participants, the event included fun games and prizes, followed by a distribution of lunch packs and Christmas gifts containing items that they can prepare during the Noche Buena festivities. More than 80 residents benefited from this outreach activity.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐲. 𝐉𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐲𝐧 𝐅. 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨 discussed the importance of civil registry documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, and Certificates of No Marriage (CENOMAR). She guided participants through the process of acquiring these documents and highlighted their benefits. Additionally, she explained the process and advantages of legitimizing children.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐲. 𝐍𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐜𝐬𝐢𝐭 focused on the significance of administrative documents for education and employment. They detailed the procedures for obtaining certificates of residency, Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), Social Security System (SSS) numbers, Pag-IBIG Membership Identification Numbers (MID), NBI clearances, and police clearances. The lawyers emphasized the importance of these documents in various life aspects.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐲. 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐞 𝐃. 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚 provided an overview of the judicial process, covering small claims, barangay conciliation, arbitration, and mediation. She explained how these processes work and their significance in resolving disputes.

𝐓𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫, 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩, 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝟐 𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐡𝐞-𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬. The event also served as a platform for CCLELAS to give back to the community. Kits and food packs were distributed to participants, invited speakers, and volunteers.
