The Ateneo de Manila University Law School (ALS) and the Sports Law Institute and Learning Center (Sports Law ILC) are excited to announce a partnership to develop sports law in the Philippines.
Beginning SY 2026 – 2027, the ALS and Sports Law ILC will provide a special Sports Law Certificate to eligible ALS students upon their graduation.
Envisioned as part of the ALS J.D. degree, the Sports Law Certificate will direct interested students to courses and extracurricular learning opportunities needed to excel in the field of sports law. The Sports Law Certificate will also prove as a helpful credential for students who wish to explore employment in the sports industry, particularly in international federations, professional clubs, professional or amateur leagues, university athletic programs, and national sports associations.
This specialized Sports Law Certificate is the first of its kind in the Philippine legal education.
The partnership between the ALS and Sports Law ILC promises to make the ALS the academic center for sports law education in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. As sports law is an exciting and emerging field of practice within the region, the partnership will put the ALS ahead of the curve in terms of innovation in legal education in the region, with Sports Law ILC providing its sports law expertise and network.
As a career in sports law requires a deep understanding of different fields of law, the Sports Law Certificate will require students to enroll in certain ALS electives and join sports law-related extra-curricular activities. Details of the specific requirements can be found in www.sportslawilc.com.
Interested ALS students must signify their intention for the Sports Law Certificate upon choosing their respective tracks and by e-mailing Sports Law Professor Ignatius Michael D. Ingles ([email protected]). This will ensure that candidates will be receive proper guidance.

One of the great joys I have, both as a lawyer and frustrated author, is seeing my written work finally published. So, I'm obviously stoked to announce my latest contribution to the International Encyclopedia of Sports Law: Philippines, the definitive guide on Philippine sports law and a publication of Kluwer Law International. Woohoo!
For this 2025 edition, I've included Guiao v. PAGCOR (the 2024 Supreme Court case that promises more funding to national athletes), issues on sports governance in Philippine sports, and rights protection in international events held in the Philippines.
Thanks as usual to our firm ILC Law and Sports Law Institute and Learning Center - Sports Law ILC for the continued support in pushing Philippine sports law forward.
