UP Oroquieta successfully staged the 27th Intellectuals Quiz, an annual academic event that gathered students from various schools all over Quezon Province to celebrate knowledge, critical thinking, and social awareness. Carrying the theme “SIGWA: Sa Pagbalikwas ng Masang-Api sa Binabakbak na Haligi,” the event went beyond a traditional quiz bee, serving as a platform for meaningful discussions on the role of youth in understanding and responding to contemporary social issues.

The program opened with an empowering message from Vee Danganan, the organization's president, who reminded the participants of their agency and responsibility in shaping their own futures.

“Hawak ninyo ang takbo ng buhay ninyo,” Danganan said, encouraging students to take ownership of their choices.

He further urged them to embody the spirit of SIGWA, saying, “Palagi ninyong piliin na maging SIGWA … huwag lang basta sumabay sa alon, idaluyot ang pagiging kritikal na kumukulong sa malayang pag-iisip.”

His message set the tone for the event, emphasizing that intellectual growth must go hand in hand with critical awareness.

The event was further enriched by the Educational Discussion led by Clarisse Jane “CJ” Javier, who challenged the audience to reflect on the deeper causes of social problems.

“When communities are flooded, when bridges collapse, when people die after storms—are these really natural disasters, or are they something systemic?” Javier asked.

She also encouraged the participants to adopt a more critical mindset, stating, “Mas maging kritikal tayo in asking,” as she discussed how social structures, corruption, and political systems contribute to human suffering.

Javier emphasized that corruption is not merely an issue of numbers and reports, but one that directly affects people’s lives: “Corruption does not end in spreadsheets and audit reports—it ends in human suffering.”

The event concluded with the awarding of winners, recognizing the outstanding performance of participating schools. Quezon National High School emerged as the Overall Champion, earning the highest distinction in this year’s Intellectuals Quiz.

Turning Stress into Strength: SACLI Holds Mental Health Talk

St. Anne College Lucena, Inc. (SACLI), through its Guidance and Testing Center, conducted a Mental Health Seminar for College Students on January 23, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the 3rd Floor, EA Tower Function Hall.

The seminar, titled “Anxious but Ambitious: Turning Stress into Strength,” was designed for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th year college students and aimed to equip them with practical strategies to manage academic pressure, emotional challenges, and personal stress, a common realities in higher education.

The activity was led by Maria Pamela Ordonez, a SACLI AB Psychology alumna and magna cm laude graduate. Ordonez shared both academic and real-world perspectives on mental health, drawing from her background in psychology and her journey as a high-achieving student. Her return to SACLI as a speaker highlighted the institution’s commitment to empowering students through alumni who exemplify excellence and service.

According to the Guidance and Testing Center, the seminar formed part of SACCLI’s continuing efforts to promote student wellness and provided a safe space for open discussions on mental health. The program focused on recognizing stress triggers, building emotional resilience, and transforming anxiety into motivation and growth.

With the increasing demands of college life, SACLI hoped that the activity encouraged students to prioritize their well-being while striving for academic success, proving that ambition and mental health can go hand in hand.

St. Anne College Lucena, Inc.’s official student publication, The Lamp, is set to partner with UP Oroquieta as one of the official media partners for the upcoming 27th Intellectuals’ Quiz (IQ), an annual academic competition bringing together junior and senior high school students from across Quezon Province.

Organized by UP Oroquieta, the official varsitarian organization of Quezon Province students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, the 27th Intellectuals’ Quiz will be held face-to-face on January 31, 2026, at the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Laboratory School in Lucban, Quezon. The event is expected to draw more than 500 participants and delegates, featuring various academic, literary, and cultural competitions that promote intellectual excellence, social awareness, and youth empowerment.

As part of the partnership, The Lamp will serve as one of the official media organizations covering the event alongside other school publications from different parts of Quezon. Three selected staffers from the publication will be deployed to provide full coverage of the program, documenting major activities, competitions, and highlights throughout the day.

The Intellectuals’ Quiz, now in its 27th year, is one of UP Oroquieta’s flagship projects. According to the event primer, the competition aims to cultivate academic and holistic excellence, foster camaraderie among schools, and strengthen the sense of nationalism among the youth through its diverse sub-events, including quiz contests, writing competitions, cultural performances, and visual arts.

The Lamp's Editor-in-Chief Charlaine Cervantes expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing the partnership as a milestone for the publication.

“It’s a great honor to have been chosen as one of the media partners considering that our publication has only been active recently. It’s our pleasure to be able to be a part of such a big and impactful event,” Cervantes said.

The collaboration marks a significant step for The Lamp as it continues to establish its presence in the wider campus journalism community, while contributing to the coverage and promotion of a long-running academic event that champions student excellence and critical engagement across the province.

This year, The Lamp reached new milestones as the community continued to follow, watch, and engage with its stories. These achievements would not have been possible without the support of the SACLI community.
