This is a reminder that God does not despise those who are struggling or who have made mistakes. Instead, he is patient and kind, and he is always willing to give us a second chance.
The image of a bruised reed is a powerful one. A reed is a tall, thin plant that is easily bent or broken. When a reed is bruised, it is even more vulnerable. But even a bruised reed, Jesus says, will not be broken by God.
The image of a smoldering wick is also powerful. A wick is a small piece of material that is used to light a candle or lamp. When a wick is smoldering, it is barely burning. But even a smoldering wick, Jesus says, will not be snuffed out by God.
These images teach us that God's love and mercy are for everyone, no matter how weak or vulnerable we may be. Even when we have made mistakes or fallen short, God is still willing to forgive us and give us a new beginning.
• Be patient and kind to others. Remember that everyone is struggling in some way. When we are patient and kind to others, we are reflecting the love and mercy of God.
• Trust that God is working all things together for your good. Even when we don't understand what God is doing, we can trust that he is working all things together for our good.
