LUCENA CITY — The first batch of AB Communication students from Sacred Heart College officially began their Community Outreach Program (COP) in partnership with DWVM Spirit FM Lucena through an orientation held at the Spirit FM Radio Station on Friday, November 7.

The collaboration, led by Sir Ace Villapando, aims to develop the students’ skills in news writing, field reporting, and radio production while helping the station enhance its community-oriented programming.

Running from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon every month, the program seeks to create a productive exchange of ideas between students and broadcasting professionals. “This partnership is about mutual learning—students gain real-world experience while Spirit FM benefits from fresh perspectives and production support,” said Villapando.

Under the agreement, Sacred Heart College will assign groups of five students each month to assist in production work, including on-air participation, news transcription, and field reporting. Students will focus on producing positive and developmental stories related to religion, ecology, and local community efforts, moving away from sensationalized or overly negative news angles.

Spirit FM, for its part, will provide training, feedback, and access to station resources to help students gain hands-on experience in radio broadcasting. The station also introduced the students to the format of its special teleradyo segment, “Balitang Sambayanan: News Talk,” a 30-minute program featuring segments on national, international, Vatican, CBCP, diocesan, and local news.

Aside from news production, students will also learn live broadcast techniques such as relaying live audio from field events—skills particularly relevant for religious and community activities like Holy Week coverage.

Both institutions see the partnership as a meaningful step in integrating academic learning with social communication, embodying the Vincentian values of service, collaboration, and social awareness that Sacred Heart College upholds.

𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 | CORDIANS PREVAIL: SHC-AB Comm Remains on Top in the EdukCircle Vlogging Competition

Students from the Bachelor of Arts in Communication (AB Comm) program of Sacred Heart College of Lucena City, Inc. (SHC) secured another medal in the 4th EdukCircle Vlogging Competition for Communication Students, held online via Zoom on October 25.

It was a historic victory for the AB Communication students as their vlog entry, “COMMSkwela: Where We Communicate to Educate (Scroll, Click, and Act),” hosted by Jana Amor and Daniela Therese Sinuhin, earned a national silver medal — following the program’s bronze and gold medal finishes in 2024 and 2023, respectively.

“When the Sacred Heart College AB Communication team was announced as one of the top three, the members felt immense joy and pride,” the team explained. “It was a moment filled with gratitude and fulfillment, especially for the graduating fourth-year students who had been part of the production team since the beginning,” they added.

From being part of the production team in 2023 to leading this year’s entry, Amor and Sinuhin, both fourth-year students, paved the way for SHC-AB Comm’s continued success in this year’s and last year’s competitions—showing that this win was not made overnight but was the culmination of years of hard work.

“It all started as a simple concept—a casual conversation in a coffee shop—that later evolved into a meaningful contribution,” the students shared.

Backed by the guidance and supervision of their esteemed faculty, Dr. Maria Zorayda A. Torres (Program Head of the AB Communication Program and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts), Mr. Earl B. Gicana (SHC Coordinator for the HED Student Activities and Faculty for the College of Liberal Arts – AB Communication), and Ms. Milagros G. Arida (Faculty for the College of Liberal Arts – AB Communication and CLATGED), along with the support of fellow AB Comm students, the team presented a shared vision of using media and communication as catalysts for positive change and development.

This year’s achievement reflects the consistency, discipline, and openness of the students to their mentors’ guidance in producing relevant, educational, and purposeful content, not only for the field of communication but for society as a whole.

“Behind every entry were hours of conceptualization, filming, and editing, backed by the unwavering support of the AB Communication faculty and the unity among students,” the team proudly shared.

As they celebrate this triumph, the team aims to mentor younger batches of AB Comm students to continue upholding the Cordian core values and embodying Vincentian excellence—creating meaningful works and carrying forward the program’s legacy of excellence.
