🎯 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRY SOMETHING NEW?

In the classroom, researchers sometimes want to find out whether a new teaching strategy, tool, or approach can make a difference.

But what if learners are already grouped into their regular sections?

That’s where quasi-experimental research becomes useful. It allows researchers to study the effects of an intervention in real-world settings while working with existing groups, making it particularly relevant to classroom-based research.

The key question is simple: What changed after the intervention, and how can we tell? 🔎

Student leaders from Cotta National High School attended the Youth Convention at the Lucena Convention Center, centered on the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspiration”, September 9.

The CNHS delegation consisted of SSLG Officers Dimaculangan, Pamaloy, Alcala, and Bibon, accompanied by former SSLG Coordinator Sir Christian Genesis R. Guinto.

The convention highlighted the importance of youth leadership and preparing the next generation. It brought together young people who were given the opportunity to gain new perspectives, reflect on their responsibilities, and better understand how their actions can contribute to their communities.

Through the discussions and activities, the participants were encouraged to view leadership not only as a position, but also as a commitment to serve, take initiative, and make meaningful contributions. The gathering also emphasized how young people from different experiences can share a common aspiration for positive change.

The Youth Convention gave the participating SSLG officers an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, meet fellow young leaders, and gain experiences that can contribute to their continued growth in student leadership and service.

A two-day Youth Camp was held on September 7, bringing young leader participants together for an experience centered on teamwork, participation, and building connections with fellow youth.

Representing the Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) of Cotta National High School were SSLG President Morales and SSLG Treasurer Bibon, together with the SSLG Co-Coordinator, Ma’am Cyrell May Sicillano.

The first day featured various group activities that encouraged cooperation, creativity, and camaraderie among the participants. The activities gave the youth opportunities to work with their groups, participate actively, and showcase their enthusiasm and skills.

The second day continued with a series of station-based activities, where participants took on different challenges prepared throughout the camp. These activities allowed them to interact with others, strengthen their teamwork, and gain new experiences along the way.

The Youth Camp concluded with an awarding of participation, recognizing the involvement and efforts of the participants throughout the two-day activity.

For Morales and Bibon, the Youth Camp served as another opportunity to represent the CNHS SSLG, participate in meaningful youth activities, and gain experiences that they can carry with them in their journey as student leaders.

EMPOWERING LEARNERS THROUGH AWARENESS

Cotta National High School conducted an awareness activity on Teenage Pregnancy and HIV Prevention on September 22, led by Nurse Harvey T. Natividad II. The session provided learners with age-appropriate information on responsible decision-making, healthy relationships, HIV prevention, and protecting their health and future.

Through the initiative of the Gender and Development (GAD) Program, CNHS continues to promote a safe, informed, and supportive environment where learners are empowered to make responsible choices.

During yesterday’s Flag Raising Ceremony, Cotta National High School joined the simultaneous launch of the “Build Partnership, Early Detection, Swift Alert and Tactical Response (B.E.S.T.)” School Alert and Rapid Response System, led by the Quezon Province Police.

The activity was joined by Schools Division Superintendent, Susan D. L. Oribiana and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Engr. Edenia O. Libranda, together with Lowell B. Busa, CNHS School Head, school personnel and partner agencies.

The program aims to strengthen school security, preparedness, and rapid response to shooting incidents and other potential threats, fostering a safer learning environment for the entire CNHS community.

🔎 CONNECTED OR COINCIDENCE?

Sometimes, research starts with noticing that two things seem to happen together. But is there really a relationship between them, or are we simply seeing a coincidence?

Correlational research helps us take a closer look at these connections by examining how variables are associated in a given population. It can reveal patterns that may lead to deeper questions and further investigation.

So, when your research question asks whether variables are connected, look for the relationship before looking for the cause.

🎉 Research Publication Announcement

Congratulations to Mr. Christian Genesis R. Guinto and Ms. Maria Magdalena S. Cabangca, teacher-researchers from Cotta National High School, on the successful publication of their research entitled “Gauthmath as AI-Assisted Scaffolding in Secondary Mathematics: Learner Achievement and Acceptability in Combinatorics” in the Southeast Asian Journal of STEM Education (SAJSE).

🔎 Sometimes, research is simply about understanding what is happening.

Not every study needs an intervention, experiment, or treatment. Sometimes, the goal is to capture the current picture and understand a population or phenomenon as it exists.

That’s where descriptive research comes in. It can be a useful starting point for identifying patterns, characteristics, and current conditions that may guide future research or action.

Before choosing a research design, ask: What exactly do I want my study to accomplish? 🎯

Selected Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners of Cotta National High School participated in a robotics training and hands-on workshop held on September 12, 2026, at Lucena City National High School Main.

The activity, facilitated by Mr. Alexander Padolina of Lucena City National High School, introduced the learners to the fundamentals of robotics, including coding and programming. The participants also took part in a hands-on workshop on how to code, operate, and use the 1-kg Sumobot from GearTech, allowing them to apply their knowledge through an actual robotics platform.

The learners were accompanied by Science teachers Mr. Christian Genesis R. Guinto and Ms. Ronalie S. Maquinana, who guided and supported them throughout the training. The activity provided an engaging opportunity for the participants to strengthen their skills in coding, problem-solving, and robotics while gaining practical experience in science and technology.

The activity was made possible through the support of Ms. Joanna Irish P. Francia, Science Department Head of Cotta National High School, Mr. Lowell B. Busa, School Head, and Dr. Erwin R. Abrencillo, Science Education Program Supervisor.

The robotics training reflects Cotta NHS's continuing efforts to provide learners with meaningful experiences that develop their interest and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Cotta National High School actively participated in the Division Research Colloquium 2026 for the Secondary, North, and West Districts, held on September 11, 2026, at the Pacific Mall Event Theater in Lucena City.

The colloquium brought together teacher-researchers, teachers, and education personnel from across the Schools Division of Lucena City for a meaningful exchange of research findings, innovative practices, and evidence-based initiatives aimed at contributing to the continuous improvement of education.

Representing Cotta National High School, Mr. Christian Genesis R. Guinto, School Research Coordinator, and Ms. Wneneilie C. Flores presented their research as a team through an oral presentation entitled “AI-Generated Inclusive Science Imagery: Effects on Science Capital and STEM Identity.” Their study explored the potential effects of AI-generated inclusive science imagery on learners' science capital and STEM identity.

Mr. Guinto also presented a poster entitled “Research Attitudes and Competencies of Secondary School Teachers: Basis for a Support Program.” The study examined the research attitudes and competencies of secondary school teachers and provided a basis for developing appropriate support mechanisms to strengthen teachers' capacity to engage in research.

Adding to the school's participation, teachers from Cotta National High School attended the colloquium and listened to the various research presentations. Their presence provided an opportunity to learn from fellow teacher-researchers, gain insights from research findings, and further appreciate the role of research in addressing educational challenges and improving classroom and school practices.

The participation of Cotta National High School in the colloquium reflects the school's continuing commitment to strengthening a culture of research and evidence-informed practice. As the school continues to promote research among its teaching personnel, opportunities such as the Division Research Colloquium provide valuable spaces for collaboration, professional learning, and the sharing of innovative ideas within the education community.

Special thanks are extended to Ms. Mary Cleire D. Miguel, SEPS-Planning & Research, for her invaluable support, guidance, and encouragement to the participating researchers, and to Mr. Lowell B. Busa, School Principal, for his continued support of the school's research initiatives and professional development of its teachers.

The successful participation of Cotta National High School in the Division Research Colloquium 2026 highlights the school's continuing efforts to strengthen research engagement, inspire innovation, and promote the use of evidence in advancing meaningful educational practice.
