DES Holds LAC Session on Gender-Responsive Education and Inclusive Learning

To strengthen teachersโ€™ understanding of gender-responsive and inclusive education, Dalahican Elementary School (DES) conducted a Learning Action Cell (LAC) Session on the Gender-Responsive Basic Education Program in line with DepEd Order No. 32, s. 2017 on June 3,2026. The activity aimed to deepen educatorsโ€™ awareness of creating learning environments where all learners, regardless of gender, are given equal opportunities to learn, participate, and thrive.

The session opened with an inspiring message from Mrs. Ferlinda M. Briones, School Principal, who reminded teachers of their important role in shaping a school culture that embraces diversity and inclusion.

โ€œEvery child deserves to feel accepted, respected, and valued in school. As educators, we have the power to create classrooms where every learner feels that they belong and can succeed,โ€ she shared.

The first speaker, Dr. Joy D. Talens, delivered a heartfelt discussion on inclusion and learner well-being. She emphasized that sometimes, one caring person can make a significant difference in a childโ€™s life. She highlighted the experiences of learners from the LGBTQIA+ community and those with disabilities, stressing that every learner deserves to feel accepted and included.

Dr. Talens also discussed the connection between learning gaps and mental health, reminding participants that each learner comes with unique needs and circumstances. One of the most memorable points from her presentation was her reflection that every learner enters the classroom silently asking, โ€œDo I matter here?โ€ She encouraged teachers to respond to that question through compassion, understanding, and inclusive practices.

The second speaker, Dr. Romain G. Magboo, focused on mental health and the importance of creating safe spaces for learners. Through relatable examples, he discussed the Safe Spaces Act and emphasized that everyone deserves respect and dignity regardless of gender.

Dr. Magboo further explored how schools can support learnersโ€™ mental health through inclusive practices. He introduced the Biopsychosocial Approach, which considers biological, psychological, and social factors when understanding a personโ€™s behavior and well-being. He also pointed out how limited parental guidance and excessive social media use can affect young peopleโ€™s social skills and emotional development.

According to Dr. Magboo, addiction should not simply be viewed as an individual problem but as a social concern that requires support from families, schools, and communities. He also shared the Rogerian Approach, which promotes empathy, acceptance, and genuine understanding when helping individuals navigate personal challenges.

During the open forum, Dr. Armando Jasul raised questions regarding mental health interventions and inclusive education, which Dr. Magboo addressed with practical insights and recommendations.

The discussion naturally led to the importance of community involvement, particularly in supporting learners with special educational needs. Participants emphasized the need for greater participation in SPED programs and encouraged teachers with expertise in handling children with special needs to volunteer their knowledge and services.

As part of his commitment to supporting schools, Dr. Magboo expressed his willingness to extend assistance through a Triad Model, which strengthens collaboration among teachers, parents, and learners. The model includes parental agreements that document interventions, assigned tasks, and learner progress to ensure consistency and structure in implementing support programs.

Meanwhile, Dr. Talens highlighted the value of involving stakeholders in school initiatives. She stressed that parents, community leaders, and partner organizations play a vital role in creating an educational environment where every learner feels supported and empowered.
