Silangang Mayao Elementary School marked a momentous milestone with its 60th Graduation Ceremony, themed “Pilipinong Nagsipagtapos: Handang Mamuno nang may Kakayahan at Mabuting Pagkatao.” The celebration opened with a dignified processional, followed by the singing of the must songs led by Mrs. Brenda Sanchez and an opening prayer offered by Mrs. Melanie Joy Silang, setting a reflective and inspiring tone for the gathering.

The ceremony was enriched by the heartfelt message of School Head Dr. Pearl L. Tuzon, who highlighted the journey, growth, and perseverance of the graduates. A significant highlight of the program was the Confirmation of Graduates, formally administered by Schools Division Superintendent Susan DL. Oribiana, whose presence underscored the importance of leadership, character, and readiness among the young completers. The awarding of diplomas was led by SDS Oribiana, together with Dr. Laverne Tarubal (EPS I–ESP), PSDS Eden E. An uplifting video message from DepEd Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara preceded the introduction of the Guest Speaker, Ms. Trisha R. Colo, by her former Grade 1 teacher, Maria Thelma M. Tamayo. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, pride, and a deep sense of purpose as teachers, school leaders, and guests came together to honor a journey that touched both minds and hearts.

The program opened with an inspiring message from Dr. Pearl L. Tuzon, Principal II, who warmly welcomed everyone and shared the rationale of the activity. She emphasized that the SEL journey was more than a training—it was a commitment to nurture learners holistically, recognizing that academic success is deeply rooted in emotional well-being, empathy, and positive relationships. Dedicated SMES Learner Excels in Regional Dance Sport Competition

Silangang Mayao Elementary School proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Kerk Nathan Macatangay, a dedicated learner whose passion for Dance Sport continues to shine. Together with his partner, Raine Cassidi Rigor, Kerk represented Lucena City in the prestigious RAAM–CALABARZON Dance Sport Competition—an event that brought together some of the most talented young dancers from across the region.

Stepping onto a regional stage is a significant milestone for any young athlete, yet Kerk and Raine embraced the challenge with confidence and determination. Their graceful performance, synchronized movements, and strong partnership earned them an impressive 7th place finish. This accomplishment reflects not only their talent but also the many hours they devoted to training and improving their craft. Each performance they delivered was the result of consistent effort, discipline, and teamwork—qualities that strengthened their partnership and prepared them for the regional stage. Theme: “Lead Like Babaylan”

In line with the celebration of Women’s Month, the school community gathered for a meaningful and inspiring Learning Action Cell (LAC) session with the empowering theme “Lead Like Babaylan.” The activity served not only as a professional development opportunity for teachers but also as a celebration of the strength, wisdom, and leadership of women—qualities deeply rooted in the image of the Babaylan, a respected spiritual and community leader in early Filipino society.

The program began with warm and uplifting opening remarks from the School Principal, Dr. Pearl L. Tuzon. In her message, she welcomed everyone and emphasized the importance of recognizing the role of women as leaders, mentors, and agents of change in the community and in the field of education. She reminded the participants that just like the Babaylan of the past, teachers today carry the responsibility of guiding minds and shaping the future with compassion, courage, and wisdom. Her words set a reflective and empowering tone for the entire session.

To energize the participants and create a lively atmosphere, the program continued with a short dance energizer to the upbeat tune of “Hawak Ko ang Beat.” Teachers enthusiastically joined the activity, filling the venue with laughter and positive energy. The simple yet joyful moment helped everyone relax and connect with one another, reminding participants that learning and collaboration can also be fun and uplifting.

The highlight of the session was the insightful talk delivered by PSSg Ana M. Paral, PCR PNCO, who served as the resource speaker. Her presentation, titled “The Shield of the Babaylan,” resonated deeply with the participants. With clarity, sincerity, and heartfelt delivery, PSSg Paral shared important insights on two significant topics: Gender and Development (GAD) and Drug Education (NDEP).

During her discussion on Gender and Development (GAD), she emphasized the value of building deep self-respect as the strongest foundation for personal growth and empowerment. She encouraged everyone to recognize their worth, abilities, and unique roles in society. According to her, when individuals truly respect themselves, they become more confident in making responsible decisions and standing firm in their values.

She also connected this concept to Drug Education under the National Drug Education Program (NDEP). PSSg Paral explained that self-respect acts as a “primary defense” against negative influences, especially peer pressure and the dangers of substance abuse. By nurturing self-worth and awareness, individuals are better equipped to make healthy choices and protect themselves from harmful behaviors. Her message served as a powerful reminder that education and self-awareness are essential shields in safeguarding both personal well-being and community safety.

Participants from Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils, teachers, SPTA officers and Brgy. Officials represented by Kgwd. Cristal Abustan and Belen Daleon listened attentively as the discussion highlighted the shared responsibility of teachers, parents, and community members in guiding young people toward positive life choices. The session encouraged everyone to become advocates of empowerment, awareness, and prevention within their respective roles.

To conclude the meaningful activity, the participants solemnly recited The Grand Pledge, which was led by the School Guidance Coordinator, Ms. Mizielyn M. Renigado. Kiwanis Club Gat-Uban Distributes School Zone Signages and Oral Health Kits to Kindergarten Learners

Silangang Mayao Elementary School recently received generous support from the Kiwanis Club Gat-Uban through the distribution of “Slow Down: School Zone” signages and oral health kits for the kindergarten learners. The activity also included the giving of snacks consisting of one solid food and one liquid drink to the young learners.

The outreach program was led by Kiwanis Club Gat-Uban President Alpha Joy Cesell Reginio, together with Secretary Michelle Javier, Treasurer Joan May Almira, and Division 4C Lieutenant Governor Maricel Dela Cruz Martin. Their visit brought joy and excitement to the kindergarten pupils as they received oral health kits that will help them practice proper dental hygiene and maintain healthy smiles.

The installation and distribution of the Slow Down: School Zone signages aim to promote road safety and remind motorists to drive carefully around the school premises, ensuring the protection of learners, teachers, and the community.

Ignite: A Fire Safety Awareness and Emergency Response Symposium
“Partnering with the BFP for a Fire-Ready Community”

Silangang Mayao Elementary School conducted the activity entitled “Ignite: A Fire Safety Awareness and Emergency Response Symposium” on March 10, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the school covered court. The activity was organized in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Lucena City to promote fire safety awareness and strengthen the emergency preparedness of the school community. The symposium aimed to equip participants with knowledge and practical skills that can help prevent fire incidents and ensure proper response during emergencies.

The activity gathered the teaching personnel, non-teaching staff, PTA officers, members of the Sangguniang Barangay, SELG Officers and selected learners, making the event a collaborative effort of different stakeholders in promoting a fire-ready school and community.

The program formally began at 3:00 PM and was hosted by Mr. Jose Bayani V. Caliao Jr., who served as the Master of Ceremony. The opening program included the singing of a Nationalistic Song, an opening prayer, and the opening remarks. Dr. Pearl L. Tuzon, Principal II, delivered the opening remarks and reiterated the relevance of the activity, emphasizing that awareness and preparedness are essential in preventing fire incidents and ensuring the safety of everyone in the school. She highlighted that schools must always be ready for emergencies and that learning the proper response to fire situations is a shared responsibility of the entire school community.

This was followed by the explanation of the rationale of the activity by Ma’am Sherill D. Pagaduan, Master Teacher II. In her message, she clearly explained the purpose of the symposium and emphasized the importance of preparedness in schools. She presented several real-life scenarios that illustrated how fire incidents may occur unexpectedly and how proper knowledge and training can help minimize risks and prevent possible disasters. Her discussion encouraged participants to be proactive and vigilant in maintaining a safe environment in school and at home.

The main discussion was facilitated by FO1 Cedrick A. Guico, FT Crew – Logistocs Clerk of the Bureau of Fire Protection. He tackled Fire Safety and Prevention, emphasizing that fire can increase or spread every 30 seconds, making it crucial to practice proper prevention and immediate response. He also explained the Fire Tetrahedron, which includes the four elements necessary for fire to exist: heat, fuel, oxygen, and the chemical chain reaction. To make the discussion more interactive, he called volunteers from the learners to represent the elements of the fire tetrahedron, allowing them to better understand how fire starts and how removing one element can stop the fire.

FO1 Guico also emphasized the importance of preparedness by providing the contact numbers of the Lucena City Fire Department and encouraged everyone to always keep these numbers saved on their phones so that immediate assistance can be requested during emergencies.

Following the discussion, FO1 Joed T. Lopez – Firetruck Driver Operator, Operations Clerk, led the Technical Demonstration of the PASS Method, which is the proper way of using a fire extinguisher. He first discussed the different parts of the fire extinguisher and their functions before demonstrating the correct procedure. The PASS Method stands for Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. After the demonstration, he invited a learner to perform the steps he demonstrated to ensure that the instructions were clearly understood.

To reinforce the learning experience, FO1 Lopez also led the Practical Return Demonstration, where participants, including teachers and staff, were given the opportunity to operate the fire extinguisher themselves under proper supervision. This hands-on activity helped participants gain confidence and practical experience in using firefighting equipment during emergency situations.

During the debriefing session, FO3 Kirk Ivan V. Hugo Acting Shift In Charge, Firetruck Driver Operator, shared his observations and recommendations based on his inspection of the classrooms and school facilities. He provided several suggestions to further improve the school’s safety preparedness. These included the identification and installation of suggested emergency exits, the formation of a fire brigade and rescue organization, and the conduct of regular emergency procedure training for the school personnel and learners.

He also briefly explained the difference between an earthquake drill and a fire drill, emphasizing that each type of emergency requires different procedures and responses. Before concluding his message, FO3 Hugo introduced the BFP’s “SAFE Kayo” tagline, which serves as a simple reminder of the proper steps during a fire emergency. SAFE stands for Sound the alarm, Activate the Fire Department, Fight the fire, and Evacuate.

The activity concluded with closing remarks and expressions of gratitude to the Bureau of Fire Protection for sharing their expertise and for supporting the school in promoting safety awareness. The participants expressed their appreciation for the informative and practical learning experience that the symposium provided.

Project BABAYLAN: “Braving Authentic Biology and Advancing Yielding Language in National Gender and Development (GAD) Education” was successfully conducted on March 9, 2026 at 3:00 PM, with the participation of teachers who gathered to strengthen their awareness and understanding of Gender and Development (GAD) in education. The activity aimed to empower educators with knowledge and perspectives that promote inclusivity, equality, and holistic well-being in the school community.

The program was smoothly facilitated by the Emcee, Teacher Rosabel V. Cusi, who guided the flow of the activity and warmly welcomed the participants and guest speakers. Her effective hosting helped maintain an organized and engaging atmosphere throughout the program.

The activity formally began with the Opening Remarks delivered by the school principal, Ma’am Pearl L. Tuzon. In her message, she emphasized the importance of Gender and Development programs in education and highlighted the role of teachers in promoting respect, equality, and understanding among learners. She also encouraged the participants to actively listen and reflect on the discussions that would be shared by the speakers.

The first speaker, Ma’am Marilyn L. Bristol, delivered an insightful discussion on “The Babaylan Mindset.” She explained the historical role of the Babaylan as a symbol of wisdom, leadership, and spiritual guidance in early Filipino society. The activity was spearheaded by the School Parents-Teachers Association (SPTA) under the leadership of President Imelda Lacerna, with the guidance and support of the school principal, Dr. Pearl L. Tuzon.

The event brought together a vibrant mix of participants including the Zumba Ladies of Silangang Mayao, members of the Sangguniang Barangay headed by Barangay Captain Ricardo Lafuente, as well as enthusiastic parents and learners who filled the school grounds with lively movement and positive energy.
