Faculty Achievement:

SLSU Faculty Excel at INDTERCON 2026; Yao Claims Championship, Elloso Team 1st Runner-Up

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) faculty delegates secured top honors at the Industrial Technology Resource Convention (INDTERCON) 2026, held at Valencia Hall, Bulacan State University, on September 24, 2026.

Dr. Claire Ann M. Yao of the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) and her team was hailed Overall Champion. Their team also earned the Best in Cake Category, Best in Ice Cream Category, and Most Popular Facebook Post awards sweeping almost all of the awards.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jeremiah Elloso of CABHA, together with Mr. Marlon Andaya and Ms. Nichole Ann Lago of SLSU Tayabas, secured the Overall 1st Runner-Up distinction.

Other SLSU delegates also delivered strong performances. Mr. Jay-R Negrite of SLSU JGE Tagkawayan, Ms. Maricel Lingatong of CIT, and Ms. Janel Grimaldo of SLSU Lucena were named Overall 2nd Runner-Up, while Ms. Aurita Laguador of CIT received the Best in Bread Category award and placed Overall 3rd Runner-Up.

The three-day INDTERCON 2026 brought together educators, industry partners, and technical professionals for competitions, professional development, culinary innovation, cultural exchange, and academic-industry collaboration.

The achievements of the SLSU faculty delegates highlight the university’s commitment to professional excellence, continuous faculty development, innovation, and industry collaboration.

SLSU Hospitality Management Faculty Take Part in the 25th EdukCircle Convention on Tourism and Hospitality

Southern Luzon State University continues to strengthen its presence in the national tourism and hospitality education community as the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) – Main Campus once again served as one of the co-organizers of the 25th EdukCircle Convention on Tourism and Hospitality held on September 26, 2026, at the GT Toyota Asian Center Auditorium, University of the Philippines Diliman.

With the theme “Shaping the Future of Hospitality: Innovation, Excellence, and Global Perspectives,” the convention brought together hospitality and tourism educators, administrators, professionals, and students from various institutions across the country. The program featured discussions on emerging trends and critical issues in tourism and hospitality education, including data science, artificial intelligence, global hospitality careers, quality management, culinary education, and AI governance and privacy.

Adding distinction to SLSU's participation, three faculty members from the Hospitality Management program served as members of the panel during the convention: Dr. Bernadette N. Lajara; Dr. Manilyn G. Zubieta; and, Dr. Sherwin R. Pernia.
Their participation as panelists reflects the expertise and active engagement of SLSU faculty in advancing conversations on contemporary issues, innovations, and emerging directions in tourism and hospitality education.

The 25th EdukCircle Convention further highlighted the importance of collaboration among higher education institutions in preparing hospitality and tourism professionals who are innovative, globally competitive, technologically adaptive, and committed to excellence in service.

Faculty Achievement
Yao Wins 3rd Place in S&T Week 2026 Research Poster Competition

Faculty researcher Dr. Claire Ann Yao secured 3rd Place in the Research Poster Competition under the Social Sciences, Education, Tourism, Culture, Health and Information Systems category during the Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW) 2026 held on September 17, 2026.

Dr. Yao presented her research entitled “Beyond Understanding Native Traditions and Artisans Livelihood (BUNTAL): Policy Pathways for Sustainable Buntal Weaving Industry in Lucban, Quezon.”

The study explores the buntal weaving industry of Lucban, Quezon, focusing on the traditions, livelihood realities, and sustainability challenges surrounding the community of local artisans. Through the research, Dr. Yao highlights the importance of moving beyond simply documenting the cultural significance of buntal weaving toward identifying policy pathways that can help sustain the industry and protect the livelihood of its artisans.

Her winning research poster underscores the intersection of culture, tourism, livelihood, and sustainable community development, demonstrating how research can contribute to the preservation of local traditions while addressing the contemporary needs of cultural communities.

The recognition also highlights the role of research in advancing local knowledge and cultural heritage, particularly in communities where traditional crafts serve not only as expressions of identity but also as sources of livelihood.

Dr. Yao’s achievement adds to SLSU’s growing showcase of research and innovation during STW 2026, reinforcing the University's commitment to generating evidence-based solutions that respond to community needs while preserving and strengthening local heritage.

Her study on buntal weaving presents a timely message: sustaining cultural heritage means sustaining the people, knowledge, and livelihoods that keep the tradition alive.

CABHA wins 2nd place in Booth Design Competition in STW 2026

Southern Luzon State University – College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA) secured 2nd Place in the Booth Competition during the Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW) 2026, held on September 17, 2026.

The award-winning booth was a collaborative effort of the CABHA Student Council and Camarero de Bar, and faculty members bringing together the creativity, research, entrepreneurship, and technical skills of Hospitality Management students.

Anchored on the STW 2026 theme, “Science, Technology, and Digital Innovation, Driving Food Security, Sustainable Energy and National Resilience,” the booth featured a collection of student-developed innovations demonstrating how hospitality education can contribute to sustainable food systems and community-based innovation.

Among the featured innovations were Green Banana Peel Flour, developed through student research, highlighting the potential of utilizing underused agricultural resources; and Botanical Bitters made from papaya peel, showcasing creative approaches to food by-product utilization and beverage innovation.

The booth also highlighted products developed under the Entrepreneurship in Tourism and Hospitality course, including Kamote Coffee, demonstrating how locally available crops can be transformed into value-added and potentially marketable products.

Under the Oenology course, students showcased their experimentation with various wines produced from fruits and vegetables, reflecting the application of scientific principles in fermentation and beverage production. The display also featured award-winning cocktail creations from student competitions, highlighting the students’ skills in beverage innovation, mixology, and creative product development.

Beyond presenting products, the booth demonstrated the connection between research, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and hospitality practice. Its design incorporated abundant greenery, natural textures, Filipino-inspired decorative elements, and sustainable eco-friendly materials to reinforce the message of environmental responsibility and resourcefulness.

The collaborative presentation emphasized CABHA’s commitment to developing students who are not only skilled hospitality professionals but also researchers, innovators, and future entrepreneurs capable of creating solutions from local resources.

Through the booth, CABHA showcased a simple but powerful message: innovation begins with what is available, research transforms ideas into solutions, and students can help shape a more sustainable and resilient future.

STW ‘26 UPDATE | CABHA claims first sustainable packaging design title

Southern Luzon State University - College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA) students clinched first place in the Sustainable Packaging Design Challenge themed "Innovative and Eco-Friendly Packaging for Lucban Longganisa,” STW 2026, Sept. 17.

With their winning packaging design titled “Lukban Go” crafted from coconut husk fiber, CABHA duo Josh Andrei Maminta and Kenneth Palad snatched the first spot in the competition.

Meanwhile, Romano Decena from SLSU Graduate School secured the second spot with his design concept titled, "Pahiyas Likas: Sarap na Wagas, Para sa Bukas."

Furthermore, Fairah Hyacinth Arena’s design placed third with her entry titled “Palma-Lunan: Where Traditional Lucban Longganisa Meets Structural Innovation.”

SKILLS IN ACTION, SERVICE WITH PURPOSE!

The Katipuneros proudly recognizes the BSHM 4B students who put their food and beverage handling skills into practice during the Ceremonial MOA Signing between Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), Cavite State University (CSU), and Vin Vie Integrated Farm Corp.

Through their participation in the event, our students had the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have developed in the classroom to an actual institutional gathering. Their involvement reflects the importance of professionalism, teamwork, attention to detail, and quality service in the hospitality industry.

From preparation to service, every task became an opportunity to demonstrate what it means to be a future hospitality professional.
