Beyond the awards, certificates, and recognition, one of the core goals of SLMUNC 2025 is to reach beyond the conference halls and into the public sphere: to practice diplomacy even when no one believes in you.

Throughout this journey, the Secretariat has strived to uphold its commitment to advancing diplomacy, particularly within the Southern Tagalog region.

In the midst of ongoing sociopolitical upheavals, both domestically and globally, it is now more important than ever for young leaders to step forward with innovative ideas that can help improve lives, uphold our shared humanity, and consciously choose compassion over division.

Above all, SLMUNC calls on the youth to speak up when freedom of expression is challenged, and to stand firm in the face of uncertainty.

With this, the SLMUNC 2025 Secretariat officially signs off.

PHILSEA Executive Director Ervine Sape was invited to discuss submarine cables at the Opening Plenary of the 5th Southern Luzon Model United Nations Conference held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna last 24 October 2025 in commemoration of the 80th Founding Anniversary of the United Nations and with the theme "The Edge Effects of Diplomacy: Developing New Corridors for Sustainability."

Executive Director Sape began his presentation with the different maritime zonal approaches under the Law of the Sea Convention where he highlighted the sovereignty, sovereign rights, navigational rights, and freedoms of states. He then discussed the right to lay and maintain submarine cables across maritime zones, as well as the prescriptive and enforcement jurisdictions and due regard obligation of states in laying and maintenance of submarine cables. He also highlighted some developments and challenges in protecting the submarine cables across Southeast Asia. He ended his talk by providing key considerations for the delegates, particularly the simulation of their United Nations Security Council - Crisis Committee which has a scenario of submarine cable sabotage near Taiwan and the West Philippine Sea.

The Conference was co-organised by several student-led academic and co-curricular organisations in the University, endorsed by the faculty, deans, and administrators of different colleges and offices within the University.
