🐝✨ What a BUZZy Week for the UPLB Bee Program! ✨🐝

The past week has been filled with exciting milestones, international engagements, and field activities for some members of our colony.

Congratulations to our Program Researcher, Jessica Baroga-Barbecho, together with her co-authors from KMU, Taiwan, and members of the UPLB Bee Program, for winning the Best Video/Paper Presentation Award during the 2-day online 2026 International Symposium on Stingless Bees (ISSB) organized by International Bee Research Association - IBRA on June 17–18, 2026.

Their award-winning paper, “𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑡 𝐺𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑝𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑜𝑛𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠,” highlights important advances in the understanding of Philippine stingless bee diversity. The study contributes valuable scientific insights that can support species conservation, sustainable meliponiculture, and future taxonomic and genetic research on native pollinators.

The UPLB Bee Program was honored to be invited to the 35th Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia held on June 19, 2026, at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati City.

Representing the Program were Dr. Maria Amelita Estacio, Dr. Cleofas Cervancia, and RG Cervancia. During the event, Her Excellency Smiljana Knez, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the Philippines Embassy of Slovenia in Manila / Veleposlaništvo Slovenije v Manili, highlighted the initial engagement and collaboration on our project supporting women-led stingless beekeeping initiatives in Labo, Camarines Norte. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to empowering communities, promoting biodiversity conservation, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through beekeeping.

Meanwhile, members of the UPLB Bee Program are currently in the Davao Region conducting field surveys of native bee colonies and undertaking experiments involving 𝐴𝑝𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑎. These activities aim to expand our understanding of bee distribution, ecology, behavior, and adaptation across different habitats in the country. The fieldwork will generate valuable data that can help guide future conservation and management strategies for both native and introduced bee species.

From international recognition to global partnerships and on-the-ground research, the UPLB Bee Program continues to champion science, innovation, conservation, and community development.

One BEE at a time. 🐝💛

As an extension of the celebration of World Bee Day, the UPLB Bee Program, together with the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology and the City Agriculture Office of Naga City Cago Naga, successfully conducted a training on Stingless Bee-Keeping & Product Processing at Jovial Agrifarm in Barangay Panicuason, Naga City on May 21, 2026.

Participants from different parts of Bicol Region learned about the importance of bees and beekeeping, stingless bee biology and behavior, honey myths and facts, and gained hands-on experience in the management of stingless bee (locally known as 𝑘𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑙𝑜𝑡), product processing, honey and pollen analyses, propolis soap making, lip balm production, and honey cider making.

This initiative strongly supports Naga City’s advocacy for sustainable agriculture, food security, and the achievement of Zero Hunger by promoting community-based livelihood opportunities through stingless beekeeping. By empowering local communities with knowledge and skills in stingless bee-keeping, the Program envisions future projects that will strengthen pollinator conservation, enhance local food production, and create sustainable income opportunities for the communties in Naga City. 🐝🐝🐝🐝

𝓗𝓪𝓹𝓹𝔂 𝓦𝓸𝓻𝓵𝓭 𝓑𝓮𝓮 𝓓𝓪𝔂!

Today, the UPLB Bee Program, together with Project
Bee Inspired Corporation, the AAA Philippines, and the Embassy of Slovenia in Manila / Veleposlaništvo Slovenije v Manili proudly launch the 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏-𝑳𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑩𝒆𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 in Labo, Camarines Norte.

The initiative empowers 13 women-led households through training in stingless beekeeping, management, and product and enterprise development. It promotes climate-resilient, biodiversity-friendly, and community-driven livelihoods while advancing sustainable resource use and environmental conservation.

As we celebrate World Bee Day, an initiative originating in Slovenia to recognize the important role of bees and other pollinators, we honor the shared commitment to empowering communities through bee-centered sustainable development.

This meaningful initiative was made possible by the generous support of the Slovenian Embassy to the Philippines and Bee Inspired Corporation.

Thank you to our partners and supporters for making this event truly BEEautiful:

The UPLB Bee Program proudly joins the celebration of 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏’𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉, where our Researcher-Entomologist Ms Jessica Baroga-Barbecho, shared her insights on women leading community-based beekeeping initiatives at DA - Bureau of Agricultural Research on March 26, 2026.

Ms Baroga-Barbecho highlighted how empowered women are shaping sustainable livelihoods and uplifting communities (i.e., Maliwaliw, Bataan, Mindoro, and Lanao del Norte).

Just like in every hive, every role matters = just as every woman’s contribution counts 🐝💜

: DA-BAR hosted 36 senior citizen members of the Philippine Society for Elders Promoting Wellness and Sustainable Development, Inc. in Diliman, Quezon City on March 26, 2026 for a beekeeping seminar that highlights women’s role in agricultural development.
