This 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, the 𝙐𝙋𝙇𝘽 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 joins the Filipino people in remembering the heroes who shaped our nation. From the sacrifices of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Gabriela Silang, and countless others whose names history may not have recorded, we inherit not only the freedom they fought for, but also the responsibility to uphold the values they stood for.

Their courage reminds us that heroism is not confined to the pages of history. It can also be found in ordinary people who, when faced with difficult circumstances, choose to protect others and stand beside those who are vulnerable.

We see this courage even among our young people. In recent school violence, there were students who chose to protect and help their classmates despite being afraid. 𝗬𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁.

Children should never have to become heroes. Schools should be places where young people learn, build friendships, and feel safe. No student should have to risk their life to protect a classmate, and no family should have to fear that sending their child to school could place them in harm's way.

To honor these young heroes is therefore not to romanticize their sacrifice, but to ask why such sacrifices were ever necessary. It is to demand safer schools and a society that takes the protection of its children seriously. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

May we build a Philippines where courage is shown not through surviving violence, but through preventing it where every child is protected, heard, and given the freedom to grow without fear.
Today, we remember our heroes.
Tomorrow, and every day after, may we live by the values they fought for.

This 21st of August, the UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society joins the nation in remembering the life of the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

His death was a change in our history. His sacrifice woke up a nation and inspired the Filipino people's courage to stand together for democracy, freedom, and justice. The life of Ninoy Aquino Jr. and what he did for our country reminds us that we should not only look back on what happened. We have to continue to fight for the Philippines now. We have to be ready to speak out, to stand together, to fight the systems that allow injustice to continue.

Honoring Ninoy Aquino Jr. is not about remembering what he did. It is about keeping his fight alive. We want a society where people are treated fairly, where people are free, and where those in power help the people.

As Filipinos and as members of the academic community, we should keep asking questions, be brave, and work together to build a future that is fair and democratic. We should never forget that the freedom we have today is because of people who were brave enough to say no to tyranny. We should know that what we do today will shape what our country will be like in the future.

Let us keep making the words of Ninoy Aquino Jr. mean something. He said:

“No to tyranny! No to corruption! No to all this degradation of human dignity! Because then, I feel the true air of your fathers who before you have shed their life for our freedoms.”

May his sacrifice not just be something we read about in books. We hope it will live on in what we do in our search for truth and in our fight, for a Philippines that is free, fair, and democratic.
