The 2026 SFCON provides a collaborative platform for students and faculty from universities and institutions across the Philippines to present and discuss research in theoretical and applied statistics, as well as allied disciplines.

Be the Next 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 (𝐏𝐒𝐐) 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧! INSTAT is currently searching for potential students who will represent UPLB at the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz.

The PSQ is a nationwide annual competition that aims to promote statistical literacy and excellence by testing the knowledge and analytical skills of freshman students enrolled in colleges and universities across the country's 18 regions. The event is jointly organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI). Cash prizes, plaques, and trophies await the provincial, regional, and national champions.

𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 — 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬, 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞-𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.

This August, we’re featuring 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞-𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 as one of our Significant Figures. Born on March 23, 1749, Laplace helped solve a problem that still shapes statistics today: how can we draw reasonable conclusions when our information is incomplete or uncertain?

He helped place probability theory on a stronger mathematical foundation, transforming it from a way of studying games of chance into a tool for understanding real-world uncertainty. Laplace showed how existing evidence could be used to update what we believe, estimate unknown quantities, and judge how likely an event is to happen. These ideas helped shape what we now recognize as Bayesian reasoning.

Laplace also applied mathematics far beyond probability. Through his work in celestial mechanics, he studied the movement of planets and helped demonstrate the long-term stability of the solar system. His work showed that even something as vast and complicated as the universe could be examined through mathematical laws.

Why do we still use his ideas today? Because we constantly make decisions without knowing everything. Laplace’s influence appears whenever researchers update predictions using new evidence, calculate risk, forecast future events, or estimate outcomes from limited information. Students may also encounter his name through the Laplace distribution, Laplace transform, Laplace equation, and Laplace approximation in statistics, mathematics, physics, and engineering.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭: Laplace’s talent became evident early. At around 18 years old, he was already teaching mathematics before eventually moving to Paris and becoming one of France’s most influential scientists. He later became so respected for the wide-ranging contributions that he was sometimes called the “Newton of France.”
As we begin another semester, Laplace reminds us that not knowing everything is not a reason to stop. It is an invitation to observe, calculate, update what we know, and keep learning.💡
